The best film ever?

He is popular here. That film was, too. I find him a little smarmy and fake, but I am in the minority.

But the best ever?

Lean? Powell and Pressburger? Reed? Hitchcock? The Ealing comedies? The great epics? The dramas?

The mind boggles.

"Home was never like this"

"Mine was"

It's not great but I can grudgingly accept it's appeal. I just wish they hadn't cast Andie MacDowell as she gives the film a cynical commercial appeal and she's spent the next decade on my tv flogging skincare products.

Meryl Streep adopts 'Dancing queen' as her song?'

That's what mine says!

I'm guessing that yesterday it read that 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' has been voted 'best film ever'.

Of course, it does depend who you ask doesn't it and that is patently crazy!

I don't think you can have a 'best film ever' can you? I struggle to do that because I have a little collection of films I like for different reasons...
Similiarly with music polls - The Smiths are probably the band I have listened to he most - but I'd never say that they were 'the best band ever'..

Mind you, I've answered surveys in streets and don't most people just say the first thing that comes in to their heads?

Woolwich in Greenwich, where I partly grew up, used to be used quite a lot for this - including 'film trailer' viewings! You'd been walking along and if you looked as though you didn't have much to do (which I clearly did as a teen because they always asked me) someone would pop up and ask you to come to a viewing of a trailer and ask your opinions about it. Then they would give you a Mars bar. I had to 'review' the trailer for 'Gorillas in the mist' once. I remember saying that it was 'overly long' - but I think that might have been because I did have something to do.

I believe, from another source, that they only polled 1,000 people as well.

what a load of rubbish to say this is the best ever brit. film. They must have asked the under 20s. How can they say its better than films like Ice Cold in Alex.

I know I am about to sink in everyones estimation when I say this, but I actually find Mr Grant very watchable and good at what he does.
