Default Alastair Sim box set...

Anyone familiar with it?

My wife recently bought it for me and it has to be said i'm quite pleased with it...that is except for one, the set comprises:

1. The Green Man
2. Folly To Be Wise
3. Geordie
4. Left Right and Centre
5. Laughter in Paradise

I think the great Alastair Sim is superb, I love his films but as much as I've tried (and I have tried) I just cant say "Folly to be Wise" is a good film, in fact if I'm honest I have to say, I thought it was garbage. Alastair Sim is without doubt a superb actor but any actor is only as good as the script, and this script was poor.

I'm sure the Alastair Sim die hards out there will rubbish me for saying that but I'm not rubbishing the great man, just that film. Incidentaly, my fave Alastair Sim film is in the Terry Thomas box set...School for Scoundrels, what a film, what a superb film.

Unfortunately I'm not.

Where was it purchased?

I do have the Terry-Thomas box set you referred to which I purchased from HMV.

I'd agree that the only good thing in Folly to be Wise was Alastair Sim, and that it was mainly the poor script that seemed to be the problem. It was scripted by James Bridie from his own stage play. It might have worked better on stage.

Alastair had often worked with Bridie in his stage plays and maybe he was blinded by their friendship and couldn't tell him that it wasn't working as a film.

Folly to be Wise is based on a wartime play so presumably quite a lot of topical references have been removed. It's very much dependent on the audience being familiar with The Brains Trust (the play's original title was It Depends What You Mean, after Prof Joad's catchphrase). Without the topicality, it seems very weak.

Default Alastair Sim Box Set

The Alastair Sim Box set is part of the COMIC ICONS SERIES on the Studio Canal label. Some other box sets available in this series include the following actors:

SID JAMES
TERRY THOMAS
LESLIE PHILLIPS

They have to be part of anybody's core collection
