Smile Chance In A Lifetime

Just watched this little gem this afternoon. Bernard Miles juggles the role director, writer, producer and actor, leading a cast of who's who in British films.
Quaint and antiquated it maybe, but enjoyable nontheless.

Bernard's wife is in it too - she's Baz's secretary.

It was thought dangerously leftie in it's time - the Board of Trade had to order cinemas to show it. I really like the location - I assume it's a real factory (it's in Gloucester, I think) - a vanished world of separate blue and white collar staff who never mix and nobody except the boss having a car.

Loved it. It had shades of 'Carry On At Your Convenience'. I kept waiting for Sid James to walk in and slap Hattie's bum

Semper ubi sub ubi

Yes I also found this film very watchable old fashioned maybe but it has that magic fifty's timelessness

Cheers Marker

I think Basil Radford is outstanding. Must be one of his very best straight roles.

The contemporary reviewers agreed with you - though they all thought the film very slightly dull, everyone thought Baz was excellent and that he should have done more straight roles. Which maybe he would have done if he'd had the opportunity.
