Default The original Sex and the City

...was clearly Dance Hall (1950). Pet Clark, Diana Dors, Jane Hylton and Natasha Parry. Four girls and how their lives revolve around the dance hall.

OK, a loose connection, but how many Brit films can you think of involving a central female cast of four or five, and not competing with any male actors? 2000 Women (1944) had Phyllis Calvert, Patricia Roc, Jean Kent, Anne Crawford and others as the main stars.

The Gainsborough films were called 'women's pictures' but they always relied on male leads as well.

The Weak and the Wicked doesn't need men to make it completely awesome.

How about 'Up the Junction'?, that Film seemed to revolve around the Womens trials and tribulation, the guys in the cast seemed secondary

It's good but it would be even better without the patronising voice-over telling the audience that the little ladies can serve their country and be pretty too! Millions Like Us also concentrates on women's involvement in the war without needing a man to explain it to us.

Turn the Key Softly is another goodie for fans of women convicts (or just out that day ex-convicts in this case)

Yes, even I find Leslie Howard's narration unbearable. Miliions Like Us does have some major male characters....and Charters and Caldicott....

Plus it has a signpost that reads 'Welcome to BLANK - Birthplace of Shakespeare'. There are so many reasons why it's the better film...

Mark O, I have wanted to see that film for years, as a fellow admirer of Our Pet. Adelphi Films, who own it, told me they intend to release it at some point but are trying to get a decent copy restored.

Black Narcissus (1947)
3 women get billing above the first men in the credits. 3 other strong female cast members all having roles that are very significant to the storyline.

The men are really just there for decoration - one of them does a nice slow strip tease throughout the length of the film
