Information Received (1961) DVD-R. This B picture cheapie was Nic Roeg's second outing as cinematographer. Some nice touches are in evidence too, which helps to lift this fairly routine story starring William Sylvester and Edward Underdown.

Hooray! Hooray! I finally managed to buy the Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple Collection from HMV and as a result I watched Murder At The Gallop and Murder Most Foul. Sheer delight.

Have you seen Murder Ahoy? That's my favorite - I like the vein of humor running through all of them, and the music suits them well.

The Rocking Horse Winner, last weekend.

Outstanding Really superb. I don't how I managed to miss it all these years.

I will run a thread on it - I haven't seen one yet. It certainly deserves it.

Sounds good! I'll be interested in your response - I thought it was quite unusual and fascinating.

Silent Dust (1949) DVD-R. A family affair here with Michael Pertwee writing the screenplay from a play by his pater Roland. Enjoyable film starring always excellent Nigel Patrick, new monied Stephen Murray is overseeing the construction of a sports pavilion to commemorate his war hero son. I wonder if they helped polish off "Lord" Seymour Hicks with all that tricycling? This was his last film.

Freelance with Ian McShane. An excellent early 70s thriller with McShane giving a really engaging perfromance as Mitch, a young 'Del-Boy' type who finds he has become a target for murderous Alan Lake. A good script and excellent atmosphere (plus an appearance from a certain Harry Fielder as a jealous husband) make this a winner. Highly recommended.

One of my favourite films which I only discovered courtesy of this site (thanks smudge). A truly under-rated classic.

Default Another Life

The story of the Bywaters/Thompson case of 1923. In my opinion, Natasha Little gives a fine performance as Edith Thompson but be warned, from the 'guilty' verdict onwards, this is difficult stuff to watch!

Imelda Staunton is so credible as the mother but if you follow the film's view that Edith was innocent, as I do, then the anguish of being locked up and just waiting to be hanged............................Natasha makes you look away from the screen, it's great acting. The sets look very 1923 but an awfully difficult film to watch.

It did make me wonder why, compared to Ruth Ellis, Tim Evans and Derek Bentley, Edith's case has had so little publicity? Perhaps because it was just so long ago, no one is left to fight it?

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

Watched "Count Five and Die " starring Nigel patrick and a very wooden Jeffrey Hunter in a tale concerning the Allies plans to fool the Germans into thinking that D-Day would happen in Holland.

Despite it's obvious no budget an enjoayabe film enlivened by NP, who was excellent as always.

Re Another Life

At the time Edith was considered a 'scarlet' woman and the press were against, rather than for, her. It was only after her death that people began to query the outcome but the anti-hanging lobby were in the minority in those days.

The first two episodes of the old ITV series MANHUNT, starring Alfred Lynch, Cyd Hayman and Peter Barkworth. Whilst a little slow by modern standards, I thought that it held up pretty well.

Very vivid though, being used to the muted tones of SECRET ARMY. I assume MANHUNT was done on video. Can anyone confirm this?

The Set Up1949
Sory of an ageing fighter, who refuses to take a fall, in this noir story of corruption and gambling in the boxing world. It has quite a sad ending.
Ryan a former Marines boxing champion looks finely honed as the unassuming Stoker Thompson in the lead role. Fine fight scenes with very lucid close-ups of some of the more bloodthirsty spectators. Well directed by Robert Wise.
