Edward Dmytryk's superb The Sniper (1951). Shot on location in San Francisco it features a brilliant performance by Arthur Franz as a mentally-ill killer who is targeting women. The production is top-notch and the script keeps sensationalism to a minmum. Dmytryk's direction is laden with symbolism but keeps the action moving at a fast pace. Adolphe Menjou appears as the wonderfuly named detective Frank Kafka. Very highly recommended.

The original version of Plaent Of The Apes, still fantastic after all these years, great peformance from Heston and a good cast, its rekindled my interest in the work of Kim Hunter, by coinicdence the next DVD i put on was Streetcar Named Desire also starring this great actress.

I bought Planet Of The Apes at my local HMV for three pounds, a real bargain as its a two disc set.

Apart from A Matter of Life and Death which I'll always recommend for many reasons, not just Kim, see if you can find a copy of The Seventh Victim (1943). It's a mystery/horror/drama type of thing but Kim gives a great performance considering that it's her first feature film.

And if you want to know more about the lady herself, she wrote a very readable autobiography, "Loose in the Kitchen". It's a biographical cook-book where she tells her life story interspersed with details of various good meals she had

Cheers Bats.

What a terrible picture of Margaret Rutherford on the box-set cover.

The Seventh Victim is one of my favourite films and Kim is excellent in it. It is one of the most atmospheric films ever made and is well worth a look ... and it has Tom Conway in it.

You can get it on R1 dvd.

Default Our Man in Havana.

Guinness is fine in this film but I really enjoyed Noel Coward's performance as his chief, some great moments! The innuendo of the meetings in the gents toilets were great! Good supporting cast and Maureen O'Hara is pure eye candy!

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

Inspector Hornleigh Goes on Holiday
Probably the best of three Harker/Sim comedy-thrillers. The dvd still has the original Gilliat/Launder CH4 introduction... and loss of sound near the end.

Carol Reed's film Kipps, from HG Wells book.

Somewhat dated, but well worth watching, for performances from Michael Redgrave, Diana Wynyard and the utterly delightful Phyllis Calvert

Kipps (1941)

I quite enjoyed KIPPS. Didn't expect to as, until now, always struggled a bit with Redgrave. But as I have grown older I have grown to appreciate him more. Tastes change, I suppose. THUNDER ROCK is a belter of his...
