Michael Clayton - this was slow to get going but once it kicked it was as good a piece of modern US cinema as I have in ages. A riveting tale of corporate greed and personal repsonsiblity bound together by superb performances by Brits Tom Wilkinson and Tilda Swinton and an even better one from George Clooney. That man just gets better and better ..... highly recommended for fans of complex legal thrillers.

The Skull (1965) DVD-R. Genuinely creepy horror from Amicus, not a tremendous amount happens to be honest but the atmosphere is superbly generated by Director Freddie Francis, greatly assisted by Elizabeth Lutyens doom laden score. Peter Cushing is quite excellent too, and the supporting cast including a fairly minor role for Christopher Lee and a sweaty Patrick Wymark, old favourites Nigel Green and Patrick Magee also appear but regrettably have little to do. Michael Gough has a puzzlingly small role very early on too.

SOS Pacific (1959) DVD-R. Most enjoyable yarn starring Dickie Attenborough, John Gregson and Eddie Constantine who is surprisingly good as the compulsory US "B" movie actor included to try and help sales. The now familiar tale of survival against the odds is given an unusual twist here, and good performances from all concerned make this well worth catching.

We watched "Run, Fat Boy, Run!" (2007) - really an old-fashioned British romantic comedy. It was fun to watch, though you could spot a few of the jokes from ten miles away.

We watched Shane Meadows' A Room for Romeo Brass (1999), the film he made before Dead Man's Shoes. It was Paddy Considine's debut on film (at least I think it was) and he gives a blistering performance, by turns hilarious and terrifying. Excellent stuff.

Watced Michael Anderson's 1959 film " The Naked Edge ", Gary Cooper's last film also featuring Deborah Kerr and a scene-steaking Eric Portman. Slow to get going but worth sticking with.

I have pencilled in for tonight. Thanks for the mini-review.

Last night we watched most of the Dad's Army tribute thingy. The series is timeless and brilliant .... aah the memories.

Taste The Blood on Dracula on DVD. Very pleasantly suprised with this I cant remember watching this when the Hammer Horrors were shown reruglarly on Htv in the seventies, but its made me realise how good threse films acually were. Good cast especially Geoffrey Keen, Linda Hayden, Peter Sallis, Gwen Watford a bit wasted and the usual Michael Ripper appearance. I must buy some more.

So did I. I thought it was just one big swizz because it was all repeats. The Victoria Wood appreciation was a repeat, and also the biography of Arthur Lowe was a repeat.

I've notice that the BBC have an annoying propensity to repackage repeats and try to flog 'em off as "original programmes".

The Terrornauts (1967) DVD-R. Cheesy SFX aside I found this quite fun, viewed as part of my quest to find unseen Amicus films. I must admit it could have been improved with a rather more dynamic leading man than the very wooden Simon Oates, but on the plus side we have Charles Hawtrey Ideal Sunday afternoon viewing anyway.

The Naked Edge with Gary Cooper and Eric Portman. As dpgmel said it's a bit slow at times but it builds to an exciting climax and features good performances from the leads. EP is very good (as usual).

Also ....

Broken Horseshoe - a Francis Durbridge mystery with Robert Beatty. Typical Durbridge tale of a mystery woman and double crosses but very entertaining none the less. Followed by the first 6 episodes of the serial Mystery of the Riverboat with Robert (Batman) Lowery. Good fun.

Finally ....

Lee Evans in Mouse Hunt which caused all three of us to laugh out loud, very funny indeed!

Just the 'Wicked Lady' as I had not played the DVD in a while. This made me watch 'The Lady Vanishes' next then on to 'The 39 Step' due to Hitchcock feel then the 1978 version of 'The 39 Steps' with Robert P as its my favourite of the three sound films made of 39 steps!

"Seya next time!"

Watched Alistair Reid's 1972 Brit-movrie "Something to Hide ", starring Peter Finch and Linda Hayden.

Very slow going and IMHO not one of PF's best efforts, worth seeing if only to say you've seen it !

Can'r be many films set on the Isle of Wight.
