The second Maugham collection Trio featuring some splendid appearances by familiar faces and Finlay Currie having a feud with John Laurie in a sanatorium.

Also the Hammer remake of The Lady Vanishes, which although superfluous could have been a lot worse. Appealing as Arthur Lowe and Ian Carmichael are as C &C, I think it was a missed opportunity that Hammer did not cast Cushing and Lee in the roles, considering their dry run a few years earlier in Horror Express.

Finally a Jeremy Brett Holmes adventure The Speckled Band with a malevolent Jeremy Kemp and impossibly pretty Rosalyn Landor as excellent guests.

The scriptwriters couldn't resist the opportunity to re-name C and C (or at least Charters who becomes Jeremy when as everybody knows, his canonical name is Hawtrey). No high-heeled nun saving the day though which is something every film should have.

A TV night for us ...... two episodes of US detective series Harry O, followed by the final ever episode of Public Eye.

Harry O was a great series and featured a fine performance by David Janssen as Harry Orwell. His world weary persona and that wonderful throaty voice were helped by some great scripts and some good recurring characters. Of the two we watched last night the better one was 'Elegy for a Cop' in which Harry has to cope with the death of his best friend. Sal Mineo played the bad guy. The other episode was called 'Lester', the title character of which would appear in a later episode too, and featured a novel twist on the 'psycho sex killer' story. Most enjoyable. Janssen's early death deprived us of a fine TV actor.

Speaking of fine TV actors, Alfred Burke was again superb as Frank Marker in the final ever episode of Public Eye entitled 'Unlucky for Some'. Marker was invlolved in a case of suspected adultery which quickly turned into blackmail and possibly murder. Beautifuly performed and well written, they sure as heck don't make 'em like this any more. If you haven't yet invested in Network's DVD sets of this show do so now!

Watched that too, back-to-back with the Douglas Wilmer '64 version. Both excellent. Nigel Stock is a great Watson. My fav Watson was only in the first series with Jeremy Brett: the very funny David Burke.

Ended up with Ian Richardson's heavily-cut and/but brilliant, moving and disturbing Richard 111. Can't wait for his Lear.

On BBC4 a very interesting programme on the life of Ralph Vaughan-Williams, my fave Brit composer, his young Widow survived him by 50 years......

Pierrepoint - ignoring the historical inaccuracies, which did help to enhance the drama, this was a rivetting portrayal of a man doing what must be one of the most harrowing jobs ever envisaged by man. Timothy Spall was magnificent as Pierrepoint in a film which successfully managed to avoid the modern day pitfalls of over-direction and political preaching, instead focussing on the characters and the human drama. This helped to make the film a very straightforward and moving experience and kept me involved for it's entire running time. Top marks to all concerned especially Spall and Eddie Marsan as 'Tish'.
Highly recommended.

Started early evening with Daphne Laureola, one of the plays in the Laurence Olivier Presents set, filmed and broadcast by Granada in 1978. It originally won Play of the Year Award 1949 for its writer James Bridie; it was adapted for TV by Hugh Whitemore.

I'd never seen this play before so it was a great discovery with strong central perfomances from Joan Plowright and the Lord and good cameos from Arthur Lowe and Willoughby Goddard.

Later, we watched Breaking the Code (the Whitemore link was pure coincidence). I never tire of seeing Jacobi's mesmerising performance as Alan Turing.

I saw Badlands last night, I found it quite dreamy and slightly absurd at times, it was like a laid-back version of Natural Born Killers, quite mellow for a movie about mass murderers which definitely made it interesting to watch

Watched Terence Young's 1959 drama " Serious Charge " starring Anthony Quayle, Sarah Churchill and " introducing Cliff Richard ", AQ plays a parish vicar accused of molesting a local youth.

Very very enjoyable and quite a daring theme considerin when it was made, an impeccable performave from Anthony Quayle.

IMHO well worth seeking out
