Not one of Powell and Pressburger's best films. But an average film by them is still better than the best from many other people ![]() That and The Battle of the River Plate were both based quite closely and accurately on true stories and those stories were so amazing in themselves that there wasn't all that much that P&P could add to them. The people behind the operation portrayed in Ill Met are worthy of further investigation. There were a bunch of mainly ex Public School people who were the sort of chaps who, had it not been for the war, would have become smugglers or pirates A lot of them finished up based in Cairo and they'd go off on various adventures from there. After Crete was invaded and the Allies were kicked out, one of them had the crazy idea of going to Crete and kidnapping the German General in charge there - so they did it! Patrick "Paddy" Leigh Fermor (Dirk Bogarde) had already travelled extensively in Greece and Crete and was known and liked by quite a few of the locals so he led the expedition there. After a few similar adventures during the war he carried on travelling and writing travel books after the war. But his wartime adventures have only really been touched on (I am told) in his latest book "Words of Mercury" (2003) Wanted for Murder Did you notice that Emeric Pressburger was in the list of writers? Based on a play, it's a good film with Eric Portman giving a believable chilling performance. A good dramatic ending at the fair on Hampstead Heath. I think there were a few "son of a hangman" films at the time. I suppose it made a change from "What did you do in the war Daddy?" types of thing Steve |

Wuthering Heights 1970
An excellent version of Emily Brontes novel,Timothy Dalton excels as the dark and brooding Heathcliff, yearning for his star crossed lover, Cathy(Anna Calder Marshall) I have always thought that film and television has not used Timothy Dalton to his full extent and theatre has had the best of him ,maybe its his choice,His portrayal of Heathcliff could have easily lead to the Bond role following straight from Connery, but it was not to be..................... |

The World of Henry Orient (1964). I knew nothing about this film going into it, and only picked it up due to Peter Sellers presence. To be honest had I realised it was primarily about the friendship between two teenage girls I would probably have avoided it, and would have missed a treat. I found this a warm and funny film, with the two girls quite excellent, and Peter Sellers very good indeed in his role as the self absorbed concert pianist constantly on the prowl.
The Galloping Major (1951). Interesting for a view of long gone Britain but not a very good film. The plot is rather childish, they seem to have been trying to aim for something with Ealing comedy whimsy, but the script lacks sufficient bite or wit. However I must admit to someone who enjoys seeing a host of character players, it is fun spotting the likes of Sid James, Charles Hawtrey, Kenneth More and blink or miss him Leslie Phillips which helped to hold my interest. |

Watched another episode from " The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes " series, this episode " The Horse of the Invisible " starred Donald Pleasance as an Edwardian ghost hunter and featured a pre- " Some Mothers.... " Michelle Dotrice.
Another entertaining episode from a series that deserves a wider audience Last edited by dpgmel; 18-09-2008 at 06:04 AM.. Reason: more info |

12 Days of Terror - a true story telling the evets surrounding the 1916 New Jersey shark attacks which were Peter Benchley's inspiration for writing Jaws. John Rhys Davies gives a good performance in this.

Under Capricorn1949
Unusual Hitchcock film (its not a thriller)! I quite enjoyed it. Joseph Cotten, Michael Wilding & an absolutely gorgeous Ingrid Bergman as an Irishwoman!! Margaret Leighton was suitably cunning as the housekeeper & there was some classy camera work from Jack Cardiff. The Aussie background was interesting. Something different!! |

A double bill of films from 1951. Starting off with High Treason directed by Roy Boulting and starring Andre Morell, Patric Doonan, Mary Morris, Liam Redmond, Anthony Nicholls, Anthony Bushell, John Bailey, Joan Hickson, Kenneth Griffith, Charles Lloyd Pack, Stuart Lindsell, Dora Bryan, Laurence naismith, Bruce Ston, John Harvey, Geoffrey Keen and Victor Maddern.
The film concerns a group of Communist saboteurs/anarchists who plot to attack Britain, mainly concentrating in the London area. They are successful in carrying out attacks in the Docks but there main plan is to bomb Battersea Power Station. An enjoyable drama with some very good performances and good use of locations. Rounding off last night's viewing was Circle of Danger directed by Jacques Tourneur and starring Ray Milland, Patricia Roc, Marius Goring, naunton Waune, Marjorie Fielding, Hugh Sinclair, Edward Rigby, John Bailey, Reginald Beckwith, Dora Bryan, Michael Hutcheson, Nora Gordon and Michael Brennan. Ray Milland plays Clay Douglas an american who visits England in the hope of finding out the truth regarding his younger brother who was killed during World War 2 when serving with the English army and was killed in a raid. However, the bullet that killed him was not German. A good suspenseful film with enjoyable performances from Patricia Roc & Marius Goring. |

Stage Fright - stands up better than expected. Didn't buy Jane Wyman as Sim's daughter. Toddy was very good indeed, IMHO much better than in his conventional Khaki parts. Did anyone else spot Lionel Jeffries in the RADA rehearsal scenes ?
