The film explores the clash between two very different worlds in Victorian Brighton. The privileged, religious household of respected chemist and Public Analyst Edward Sutton played by Mervyn Johns, who rules his family with self-righteous cruelty, and the seedy underworld occupied by pub landlord's wife Pearl played superbly by Googie Withers, her brutal alcoholic husband, Joe played by Garry Marsh and her lover a small time villain called Dan played by John Carol. Gordon Jackson plays David Sutton, eldest son of Edward Sutton who rather naively gets involved with Pearl.

A well made drama film with some very good performances.
an excellent film Joe,that I have not seen for a while

Despite the cast, I found this a bit of a disappointment. Not much of a plot just

a series of flimsy escapades. Claire Bloom does look terrific though!
You do get to see Jimmy Edwards playing cricket in a French bar though! Never a bad thing

Last night I watched " The Grey Zone " set in Auschwitz and concerning the Sonndercommando ( spelling ? ) starring amogst others Harvey Keital and Steve Buscemi. An incredibly moving and at times reasonably graphic tale of the lengths people will go to survive.

I had never heard about this film tuntil I read about it on this forum.

Given that there is a thread elsewhere concerning neo-Nazi rallies this should be essentail viewing all.

My thanks to all who brought the film to my attention.

Outcast of the Islands (1952) DVD-R. Despite an excellent performance by Trevor Howard I can't say this Carol Reed film gripped me particularly. The main problem is that the Howard character has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, we can see he is a nasty piece of work before Ralph Richardson takes him under his wing. Robert Morley is a good as I can recall seeing him as a man driven slightly potty, due to Howard joining him at the trading station. Meanwhile his wife Wendy Hiller ogles Howard but nothing significant comes of this plot line at all, while Howard pursues a local chiefs daughter.

I´ve just been viewing this 1979 film starring Ben Gazarra and the always interesting to watch Denholm Elliott. Well worth seeing with some nice location shots of Singapore - some still recognisable contrary to the opinion on IMDB. Several of the Chinese actors give an impression of being people off the street being offered a few dollars to read some lines for the film - maybe they were but it seems to work and adds to the seedy atmosphere running throughout the film.

Watched this on Ch. 5 a few years ago and was surprised how good it was. As you say, Dennholm Ellott superb as always. What a fascinating actor he was.

A double bill for me yesterday :

" The Innocents " directed by Jack Clayton with superb cinematography from Freddie Francis and starring Deborah Kerr in this underrated version of Henry James' Turn of the Screw.

Eerie and very watchable

Followed by courtesy of Network " Rachel in Danger " one of Thames Television's Armchair Thriller series, I was hooked from start to finish.

The Adventurers1951

Intrigue in the South African bushland. Peter Hammond, Gregoire Aslan,

Siobhan Mckenna, a caddish (surprise) Dennis Price & a virile Jack Hawkins in

a generally unexciting yarn that nonetheless had its moments!

Last night I watvhed " Dear Murderer 2 a gainsborough film directed by Arthur Crabtree and starring the ever excellent Eric Portman in a "perfect " murder tale.

Stunning film that I didn't want to end !

Excellent support from Greta Gynt, Dennis Price and Maxwell Reed and Jack Warner as, not surprisingly, a policeman

Catching up on series one of the excellent American television drama 'Brotherhood'.

Set in a tough Rhode Island neighborhood the series features the conflicts between two brothers from a family with an Irish background.
One son is a gangster - played by English actor Jason Isaacs.
The other a politician.
Both are trying to succeed in the world but on opposite sides of the law.

The series is very much in the Sopranos mold with the Brotherhood probably a little tougher with it's action.

Highly recommended.

Dave.
