A question for Steve - in the dinner party scene after Candy "rescues" Theo as he is about to be sent home with the other prisoners after the end of the war, and Theo reluctantly comes to Candy's house - there are about 15 or so guests. Each of them is introduced as the camera pans round the table - they may well have been actors, but I had the feeling they were somehow real people playing themselves in the film.

Does this make any sense? Can you see what I mean?

That quote was from the initial US release where they not only cut to almost half its full length and they also did away with the whole flashback concept in it.

It was also shown in some cinemas, and on TV, in a B&W version. That's how Martin Scorsese first saw it, but he still recognised that it was something special

For the advertising for the initial US release they seemed to be promoting Candy as some sort of old letch, twirling his moustache and constantly chasing the girl. The cover of the American press book is wonderful, but nothing to do with the film

I do see what you mean, but they are all actors. But British character actors who knew how to make it seem real.

They do give a great impression of the sort of people that used to run the empire. From the Bertie Wooster type, "Hoppy" Hopwood, via the quite normal people who are introduced as governors of various territories to the military types.

I taped this on a rare TV showing about fifteen years ago and finally got round to watching it last night - it's a fascinating period piece.

I haven't heard of that one, Joe. Has it ever been shown on UK TV, and did you watch it on video or DVD?

Last night I watched Muriel Box's neat little crime drama " Eyewitness " featuring Donald Sinden as a thoroughly nasty type ( boo hiss ! ) who robs a cinema safe and must dispose of the only eyewitness.

Very neatly done

Another superb film.

I watched Robert Duvall in the excellent Broken Trail.

Lars and the Real Girl
A feelgood indie comedy about a loner (Ryan Gosling) who finally finds a new love via the internet - a blow-up doll! A sort of rom-com version of Harvey.

Watched the georgeous 'twice' in this 'True' tale of Laurance Harvey's daughter.

Odd direction but what a fascinating story! Worth a look for that alone!

.....You couldn't hear it, if they were shooting at me with howitzers!

Why bother with a tape, when it has just been released on a good quality legit R1 DVD ?

Last night I watched Wolf Rilla's superb " Village of the Damned " starring George Sanders in an adaptation of John Wyndham's The Midwich Cuckoos.

Excellent viewing

Think its one of Sinden's best performances IMHO - he really is chilling in the role and a surprise for a conventional lead in the 50s taking a part like that.

Watched Poirot myself. Didn't like it earlier on but think it has improved and become less twee and slightly darker in its approach to the novels - anyone out there agree or is it just me ?

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

I could never get into previous series of "Poirot" (or POY-ROTT as my late father always insisted on pronouncing it) but I'm thoroughly enjoying this series - it could just be that my tastes have changed now that I am watching less and less TV.

DS x.

The Christmas countdown has begun - don't leave it all until the last minute!

We watched the late great David Janssen in Warning Shot, a pretty good 60s thriller reminiscent of Harper and Bullitt. Janssen's wife was played by none other than Joan Collins! Recommended.
