Ian Hislop goes off the rails - Pretty interesting documentary on the restructuring of Britain's railways spearheaded by Dr Beeching

Britain's Whitest Family - Documentary on albino members of the black and Pakistani community. Download quality was bad so I switched it off. It was'nt that great up to then anyhow.

Watched again Neil Jordan's biopic " Michael Collins ", a towering perfomance from Liam Neeson personally not so fond of Alan Rickman's portrayal of de Valera. I gather this was a labour of love to get made for Jordan but it certainly is a good film

Excellent film. I also enoyed the performances of Charles Dance, Brendan Gleeson, Stephen Rea and Aidan Quinn. Some beautiful locations also.

For us it was "Straw Dogs". It's been so long since I last saw it I'd forgotten how much of a quality cast it had. I thought it stood the test of time pretty well too.

The Very Edge (1962) DVD-R. Richard Todd and Anne Heywood find married bliss ruined by weirdo Jeremy Brett, who has designs on Heywood. Fairly routine I suppose but I enjoyed it, the tension is nicely handled and a few twists along the way, plus Brett gives a particularly good performance as the disturbed pervo.

My brother's staying with me and was looking through the collection for something to watch. We settled on the first few episodes of Press Gang from 1969. Now that was great drama.

A superb cast, many of whom went on to fame and fortune. Very good direction and production. But it also had those brilliant scripts by Steven Moffat who went on to write Coupling and the more memorable episodes of the new Doctor Who.

Press Gang was always first with the technology like mobile phones and computers as well as the very good use of the old technology like regular phones and tape recorders. It also wasn't afraid to tackle some very serious issues like drugs, child abuse, teenage suicide and other things.

I haven't watched the first few episodes for some time. But they're still well worth watching today.

Dr. Renault's Secret, with J Caroll Naish as the half-man, half ape creature.

Love that marmot wig he wears, Michael Jackson late adopted that look.

Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Default Michael Collins

dpgmel:

MICHAEL COLLINS was controversial, we found, in May 1998. We were visiting from Canada and had three weeks in the Republic and Northern Ireland. Peace everywhere: the referendum campaign was on, and optimism reigned.

But I found the Jordan film was a conversation starter in pubs and cafes. I had read a bit about the terrible Civil War that followed the Treaty. An earlier visit in 1972 had confused me: I didn't understand the division between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael those days. Ah, it was the old Treaty fight that did not end until all the veterans had died off.

In 1998, to the credit of Irish people my age (40-ish), they still had a strong sense of history without the blood emnities. The movie MICHAEL COLLINS was a dandy talking point over a few pints. No fights, but some intense opinions about the birth of their nation.

Our universal point of agreement: "Yer American Julia Roberts? Roobish, she was."

I've watched MICHAEL COLLINS several times lately, and helped by Ken Loach's superb THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY and Deborah Warner's THE LAST SEPTEMBER, I like it even more.

Thanks for this Keechelus.

Yes Michael Collins still inspires extremes of opinions in Ireland-revered and hated in almost equal measure. I think I'm right in saying that Ireland is the only Western country where the main political parties are not divided by the normal left-right agendas but rather by 20th century history.

Agree also about Ken Loach's WTSTB haven't seen The Last September is it worth viewing ?

Oh Mr Porter on BBC4 - matchless, a milestone of comic fooling. Hadn't seen it for years and decided to 'revisit' it last night and glad I did. IMHO Hay is the only one of the Music Hall stars who still comes across well on film. I think it was because he was more of a character actor than a stand-up comedian. Clearly inspired by The Ghost Train (as are alot of Hay's films) I think it is possibly the best version.

Anyone else agree ?

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !
