Watched Terence Fisher's Gainsborough film " Portrait From Life " starring Guy Rolfe, Mai Zetterling and a very good Herbert Lom in a tale of displaced persons after WWII. Very effective and moving and MZ was as good in this as she was in " Frieda "

Yesterday I watched Compton Bennett's superior B movie " The Flying Scot " starring Lee Patterson in a tale of a robbery attempt on the eponymous train.

Very enjoyable and the first ten minutes are totally dialogue free

Guy Ritchie's Rocknrolla at the cinema.

Very disappointed with this offering.
Some great acting talent on show but they were completely wasted with a very poor and ineffectual script.
Very few action scenes and little or no humor throughout the film.
The story gets bogged down and the epic ending that everyone is waiting for never happens.

A damp squid of a film and yet another Ritchie bomb.

Dave.

Am excellent double bill for me :

Joseph L Mankiwicz wartime espionage thriller " 5 Fingers " starring James Mason in a true tale of a spy in the British embassy in Ankara, very suspensful anf James Mason who I'm not normally a fan of was first rate.

Followed by :

Rewatched Ralph Thomas' fabulous " No Love For Johnnie " a first rate performance from Peter Finch ( IMHO one of his best ) in a tale of an amoral MP.

Both highly recommended in particular the latter

Recent viewings:

Hysteria (1965). Excellent psychological mystery from Hammer, Robert Webber is suffering from amnesia after a car accident and tries to piece together his life. Webber is very good indeed in this, and has excellent support from Anthony Newlands and Maurice Denham. Some nice twists here lift this from what could have been fairly predictable. Yet another Hammer we need on commercial DVD!

The Horse's Mouth (1958). Not seen this film for years and I enjoyed it very much indeed, the sumptuous colour of the excellent print also brings to life London of the 1950's. At the start one finds the roguish artist Gulley Jimson a pretty unlikeable character, but to me a least we end up loving him for among other things following his dream.

What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice? (1969). Geraldine Page is superb as the poisonous and financially distressed widow who turns to an unusual source of regular income. Ruth Gordon adds greatly as an inquisitive housekeeper, however the film does have a superior TV movie feel about it but Page's performance keeps the thing bubbling nicely.

Some wonderfully crisp B&W photography in Hysteria. I suspect most people forget that this was one from the Hammer catalogue.

Someone I knew who himself knew the novelist Joyce Carey reckoned that Guinness was completely wrong for THE HORSE'S MOUTH and that the film was a travesty... I must say that I have always enjoyed it though.

A double bill of American 'British' films; Outward Bound and The Brighton Stranger. Both are directed stiffly and could have been so much better realised.

An excellent episode of Travelling Man with Leigh Lawson followed by Steve McQueen's last film The Hunter. Not a great film but very enjoyable with The King of Cool displaying a nice touch for light comedy.

Jingle bells Batman smells ... I heard that at school Daddy.

I watched "Fortune Is A Woman" 1957, with Jack Hawkins, Arlene Dahl, Dennis Price and Greta Gynt. A well written thriller that is worth watching if you haven't seen it.

Then I watched the US election results on the Beeb.

The Devil Rides Out on ITV 4.

Simply marvellous stuff, although the print had the US title of The Devil's Bride. I wonder if there were any alterations in this?

Watched Alfred Hitchcocks Suspicion: Voice in the Night starring Barbara Rush and James Donald.

Great short story by William Hope Hodgson.

Sabotage Agent /The Adventures of Tartu 1943

Robert Donat once again, this time as a British agent working to sabotage a Nazi poison gas factory.
A good spy yarn,Donat charming as ever, even when impersonating a Romanian SS officer!
