Watching re-runs of 'Between The Lines' on UK Drama. I forgot what a good programme it was.

What am I doing here Sgt? I should have been having lunch at the Saville!

I trust that Mr. Harper now has his lines off pat? He fluffed a few when we saw ATTWN at the start of the tour - recovered most, had to have just one prompt...

He was word perfect, and very light on his feet for a gentleman of a certain age. Dennis Lill was excellent - to be honest, these two acted the younger members of the cast off the stage.

Isn't that usually the case .... the last three or four plays we have been to see have featured seasoned pros like Richard Johnson, Dennis Waterman, John Shrapnel, Harry Towb and Patrick Mower and each time they showed the youngsters how it's done. Hopefully the younger actors will learn from the experience and a new generation of decent actors will emerge, provided they don't get sucked into soapland.

A lot of older actors have the benefit of experience in Repertory which, of course, doesn't exist now.

DS x.

There are still a few good reps around .... plus touring productions, but as there are now more 'actors' in the profession than ever before jobs are still difficult to get. Also, many young actors do not have the desire for rep or touring work these days, most of them appear to want to do films/TV as a way to start their careers, leading to a dearth of really good young actors.

Why bother when you can go straight from Anna Scher's into Eastenders?

In my day you were encouraged to go into rep et al to learn your craft. One of the reasons I find watching many recent TV dramas to be such a bore is the lack of quality in the acting. A prime example of this was the BBCs He Knew He Was Right .... a veritable forest of wooden-ness from the younger members of the cast. There was a time when TV producers were reluctant to touch actors with no stage experience but it's a different world now .... you can be a student one day and earning £40k + per year on a soap the next.

I generally find that the acting on tv is of a high standard, there are exceptions of course. I watched Bullet again last night and that McQueen was a great presence but Robert Vaughan acted him off the screen. Is it because some actors are that good that they make other people ordinary. Denholm Elliot was a prime example in the abortion scene in Alfie, you could not take his eyes of him. Similar with Waterman in New Tricks, he is good at what he does, but I do not think that he is as good an actor as Armstrong & Bolam. It is all a matter of opinion and personal taste. I cannot(for some reason) like Ben Kingsley but he is an hell of an actor. I must watch He Knew He was Right to see your example. Cheers Bats

Following Doctor Who in the eighties you can tell when this came in - in Peter Davison's era there came a point when the supporting casts were filled with folk in smaller roles who frankly seemed like passers by they'd dragged in from the streets.

A mixed bag of stuff over the past 24hrs or so ... aside from the films previously mentioned I have watched the final few episodes of The Masked Marvel, Gordon Scott in Tarzan the Magnificent, an episode from the 1975 series of Public Eye and the fantastic The Night Stalker, directed by John Llewellyn Moxey.

I have to say that all these productions were excellent and were thoroughly enjoyed my me ..... Mrs Bat joined me for Public Eye and The Night Stalker and she enjoyed those too.

KEEP FIT! - George Formby, as I fancied a bit of nostalgic comedy.

INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU - with Alan Arkin in an unusual take on the character in an 'Italian Job' style 60s caper comedy. A plethora of Brit character actors in this one, and an Aquacar to boot!

Episodes from Series 3 of NEVER MIND THE QUALITY, FEEL THE WIDTH. Did Powell and Driver specialise in culture clash comedies in the 70s? Good fun!

Intent to Kill (1958)with Richard Todd. Pretty routine stuff with rather dull characters.
Tight Spot (1954) witness in peril drama with Edward G Robinson, pretty much ruined for me by a typically OTT performance from Ginger Rogers.

I love the two 'British' Gordon Scott Tarzan movies - for me, Tarzan's Greatest Adventure is the winner, but they're both excellent. I'd go so far as to say that Scott is my favourite Tarzan.
