The tribute on BBC2 on Saturday night to Geoffrey Perkins. A special edition of Comedy Connections linking all the various shows he worked on, interviews with a lot of the people he worked with and lots of clips of some great shows.

In fact the only one he has any reason to be ashamed of (IMO) is the dreadful My Family. Everything else he worked on is like a list of some of the best comedy on British TV (& radio) over the last 20 years

The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Radio 4)
Radio Active (Radio 4)
Spitting Image
KYTV
Harry Enfield's Television Programme
Harry Enfield and Chums
Game-On
Father Ted
The Thin Blue Line
The Fast Show
Operation Good Guys
Kiss Me Kate
Big Train
Ted & Ralph
Hippies
My Hero
Coupling
My Family
Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years
Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps
World of Pub
Swiss Toni
Happiness
The Catherine Tate Show

and many individual "specials".

Geoffrey was usually involved as a producer of some sort but he was also a script editor and general advisor to many up & coming performers.

An amazing career.

That was then followed by sample episodes of The Catherine Tate Show, Father Ted (on BBC2 by special permission of Channel 4) and The Fast Show

A tragedy that he was taken from us so young (55)

Steve

Courtesy of a kind forum member last night I watched Brian Desmond Hurst's 1947 melodrama " The Mark of Cain " starring Eric Portman, Sally Gray and Patrick Holt in a tale of two brothers in love withe same woman- you just knew it was going to end happily ever after !

As usual an excellent performance from EP and I was also very impressed with Sally Gray, the film improved as it went along.

Another highly recommended one

Not Forgotten: The Men Who Wouldn't Fight

An intriguing documentary in which Ian Hislop traces the stories of conscientious objecters in WW1. Thought provoking stuff and very moving too.

I watched this too, excellent. Also watched the Time Team special with them excavating the WW1 bunker, good stuff

The only problem with having an open mind is that others keep trying to put things in it...

Last night, I had the holly chance to view for the first time 20 minutes from Ken Russell's "The Devils", the next minutes to come sound ...
In fact, I interrupted it to watch a very good portrait/interview ( a german one) of John Le Carré, great man.

Watched " Poison Pen " a film from 1940 starring Flora Robson and Robert Newton in a tale of a village plauged by poison pen letters.

A good drama that was only let down by very stodgy/stagy direction ( mind you the film evolved from a play so perhaps that was not surprising ) and Flora Robson was a class above every one else in it

Grand National Night - Insp Michael Hordern vs Nigel Patrick in a stagey, but entertaining, drama about marital infidelity and murder.

The Innocents - still casts a spell and is a worthy companion piece to the BBC ghost stories.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

I thoroughly enjoyed this but, unfortunately, fell asleep before Father Ted! It was a great tribute to him that C4 allowed FT to be screened on BBC1.

It was also mentioned that Geoffrey Perkins's mother couldn't understand why his death was featured on the TV News - apparently, she had had no idea of the extent of his work!

I tried watching Ken Loach's The Wind That Shakes the Barley on Film 4 - but I gave up after about 45 minutes.

I do like a lot of Ken Loach's work, but this was just too preachy and much too biased. I like at least a bit of subtlety with my propaganda.

Every Irishman was totally innocent of doing anything wrong.
Every Englishman was utterly evil and never did anything right.

The script must have been very straightforward:
Scene 1: Everybody runs around and shouts a lot
Scene 2: Everybody runs around and shouts a lot
Scene 3: Everybody runs around and shouts a lot
and so on

Sorry Ken, but I'd even hesitate to give it 1/10
