I actually thought it was a very accessible drama with some brilliant ideas.
There were clear references to Waking the Dead and Silent Witness and the first episode was set in a sort of plausible Da Vinci Code spoof.
British dramas are hard to come by these days so we generally savour anything that comes our way, especially from Matt Graham and Ashley Pharoah, the creators of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes.
The next episode looks just as intriguing.

Sorry, but I was with Freddy on this one. It was one of the worst things I have seen on the BBC since the beginning of Eldorado. Plausible?? er, no. I could fill a book on how unlike a real archaeological site their set was before they started the Indiana Jones-meets-Dan Brown stuff . For instance, the Knights Templar...once killed, surely they would have been found and buried at some stage??? Not just left there in the pose they died in ??? I was hoping for an Archaeological Waking The Dead.....but this....just awful.
Actually, not quite. So bad it was good, I couldn't get away from it. Addictively bad, it was fun. Just don't think it has any resemblance to real life.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Other than my use of the the word 'plausible' you seem to have echoed my own sentiments on this. 'Good fun' may well have been a better description, which I interpret from your response as a substitute for 'addictively bad'.

We can watch Timeteam (as I sometimes do) if we want to see an accurate archaeological set. This is drama, not everyone's cup of tea, but from the repose of my armchair last night I thought it quite uplifting and original for Tuesday night viewing.
Will you watch it next week?

I was lost too, it was just an avalanche of characters and subplots without one strong theme running throughout. I felt like I was channel hopping between Time Team and the De Vinci Code (hated that too).

Re Bonekickers -

We quite enjoyed it once we realised that it wasn't meant to be taken seriously. The cliches - the gravel-voiced head man, the Holy splinter, the burning crosses and the utterly ludicrous rope-fight in the pit made it more of a fantasy than anything else.
It was like a mix of Doomwatch and the Omen.

Saw the final episode of the third BBC series of Operation Good Guys.

The first series about a spoof police documentary was hilarious with such guest stars as David Seaman and 'Mad' Frankie Fraser but, sadly, by the middle of the second series, it had completely lost the plot and I have no idea why they commissioned a third!
So, why did I watch every last episode of it?

I've been asking myself that all morning!

DS x.

The Christmas countdown has begun - don't leave it all until the last minute!

Thanks for the warning Freddy. I recorded it so that Mrs Chevyman and I could watch when she returns home today.

I was drawn to it after watching Jonathan Ross interviewing Adrian Lester last Friday.

I shall give it a go with an open mind and fingers crossed

Oh, I'm sure I will, I like a good laugh when I get home from work....

Oh, and I wouldn't take the Timeteam shows as being an accurate representation of real archaeological sites either....

Watched it via iplayer - after hearing all the reviews I could hardly resist! As bad as suggested, but in a fun way.
BUT I do think it was a chance missed - instead of compressing the whole story into one episode (which they seem to be doing every week by the sound of it), they could have spread it out and really played on the potential atmosphere that could have developed - slow it right down, develop the dig and the characters much more gradually, and then have strange truths emerge.
Alternatively Channel 4 should just do a TimeTeam version - put out one of the live digs at Halloween and have it all kick off after Francis Pryor unearths a deformed skull and becomes possessed by a Franciscan Black Death victim and decapitates Mick Aston, while Tony Robinson nails himself to a piece of the True Cross and Phil "I've just spent the last two hours in Carenza's trench" Harding hits the scrumpy after a poltergeist attack. I think it could work!

I watched the first 45 minutes until I was distracted by a phone call. Completely bonkers with laugh-out-loud dialogue. However Hugh Bonneville does a good line in rumpled intellectual and he's called Dolly which you have to love...

Hope I haven't spoilt it for you. With a cast of Hugh Bonneville and Adrian Lester you would hope it would do well.

Great to see Paul Rhys again, you don't see him often enough. I always thought his portrayal of Charles Stringham in A Dance to the Music of Time was superb.

I wondered what became of him. I've recently rewatched ADTTMOT on the BTVision on-demand service. I'd also seen very little of Simon Russel Beale(Widmerpool) until his recent superb turn in "Major Barbara" at the NT.

The 1937 German version of Hound of the Baskervilles directed by Carl Lamac. Superbly atmospheric and reasonably faithful version of the famous tale which gives the 1939 Rathbone version more than a run for it's money. Although the print I watched has no English sub-titles the story was easy to follow and I was able to really appreciate the fine acting on display. A real treat for a Holmes fan who has been waiting years to see this film. Watch out for Dr Winkel from The Third Man as Stapleton.
