The Net (1953) DVD-R. Fine spy/thriller with James Donald leading a group of scientists developing a supersonic aircraft, is information leaking out? Suspicion falls on the team including Herbert Lom, Patric Doonan, Muriel Pavlow and Noel Willman. The special effects hold up reasonably well in the air at least, but the story is sufficiently strong to make those short comings irrelevant.

Joe Macbeth is indeed a Shakey 'noir', but I meant 'proper' Shakespeare, not pastiches. JM is a really good film IMHO and one that I would love to see again.
I have heard Olivier's Hamlet described as a 'noir' version but I thik it's more Universal horror than 'noir'. |

A miserable night on the telly, so we got out our DVD of 'Send me no Flowers', with Doris Day and Rock Hudson.
What a treat! This must be the tenth time we've seen this film, and it seems to get better every time. Doris does her usual act, and Rock is brilliant as the dutiful husband who mistakenly thinks he's got only weeks to live. His neighbour and buddy is played by Tony randall, who does it so well. Making the best of his small part is Paul Lynde, who plays a camp, gossipy funeral park director. And a happy ending that makes you slap your thigh and jump up to pour another Martini. Ah! |
