David,

What would you call a Black Country accent transplanted to Queensland?

Industrial Aus? Aussie Pom?

Gibbie
My dear Gibbie - The Queen's English of course!

Cheers mate

Dave.

As they say in certain parts round here (just on the edge of the Black Country)

(You're right/correct!)

Not that we speak like that up here in Tettenhall (if you remember it Dave?)

Only partially - the idea was to slightly tweak the opening reel to ease people into the Edinburgh accents, so Begbie's opening monologue and Spud's interview were revoiced by the original actors. The remaining reels were exactly as shown in British cinemas.

Both Andrew Macdonald and Danny Boyle had seen the US mutilation of Gregory's Girl, which was entirely revoiced by different actors into supposedly milder Scottish accents (thus completely destroying the freshness and spontaneity - I watched about ten minutes on US TV but couldn't stand any more) and were determined to avoid the same thing happening to them - and I have to say they did a pretty good job: unless you know the scenes in question have been redubbed, it's not obvious.
This sounds like sacriledge.

Re-voicing Begbie and Spud!!!!
....and Gregory's Girl as well........naffineck

How yow gooin' our kid?

Smudger,I just got out my Uk map and reconfirmed where Tettenhall is.
Nice part of the world and not far from Shipley which has come up in our film conversatins before.
Yesterday (our time) was St.Patrick's Day which also happened to be my birthday.
I celebrated with friends at the Flag Restaurant at the Maroochy Surf Club situated right on the beautiful Maroochydore Beach with panoramic views of the coast, sipping my Crown Lager and eating my crumbed barramundi (fish for the uneducated). The Black Country never entered my mind.
This morning i received an email that my cousin Mark and his partner Dawn (who live at Great Barr) were celebrating the birth of their baby son - born seven weeks premature- who arrived on my very birthday.
It was the icing on my birthday cake and i felt right there with them.
You can take a man out of the Black Country but you can never take the Black Country out of the man's blood.

One Black Country expression that makes me still cringe though is 'Babbee' or "our Bab" for baby.
Funny thing though, here in Oz people can pick my English accent yet when visiting relatives in England i'm always told that i have an Aussie accent.
Best of both worlds I suppose

Dave.

Yes,I already have an idea of a story that involves a shy innocent young man from the Black Country emigrating to Australia who meets lots of bikini clad girls who have their evil way with him (lots of sex scenes) but who finally makes good settling down with a nymphomaniac Australian beauty queen whose family owns a brewery.
It will be shot in black & white and titled BLACK ( COUNTRY ) "BEAUTY"!

Patsy, you shouldn't have much trouble understanding the accents in THE WICKER MAN or NIL BY MOUTH. Both are top films. Neither are comedies though and at times NIL BY MOUTH gets a little heavy to watch with very realistic family violence.
I'm sure you'll enjoy them all.
You've got a great selection of DVD's there.
Please let us know your opinion on them when you've had time to watch.

Cheers

LOL BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY MATE !! (I just picked up the thread!)

Funnily enough, that very same expression about babies (round here) makes both my wife's and my toes curl ! It is horrible - horriblr, horrible HORRIBLE !!

Think yourself lucky you are where you are - all that sea, sand and panorama ; and ABC serve up a good diet of British B&W too

Where are the rest of your relatives round here then ? I bet your name will flash in my brain next time I am driving through Gt Barr LOL

Oh yes, and we're not a million miles from Shipley. That's the one saving grace of where we are - 10 minutes in the opposite direction to The Black Country and open country ; not much further to Shropshire

Funnily enough Dave mate, when I am up here in me ivory tower watching fillums, or down south scouting locations, the Black Country rarely enters my mind either!

Good on yer Smudge
All my relatives live in the Brum area. Please do not hold that against me!
Apart from Great Barr I have quite a few rellies living in the Northfield area. You could call it a green belt area - they have a park nearby.
My uncle, now retired, once worked at nearby British Leyland. He did the same job for over 30 years just soldering parts into gearbox's.I kid you not.Brain numbing work but "the pay was good" he always used to say.He has never owned a car in his life.Maybe there's a message there for all of us...but i can't quite see it.
Ooh..and I've a cousin who lives in Stourbridge.

Been to any good locations recently mate?
There doesn't seems to be an awful lot of film locations situated in the Black Country. Wonder why?

Cheers Mate

Stourbridge eh ?

We go to regular TV events at the Town Hall there ; I'll have to look see if there's anybody walking round drinking cans of Fosters !

Nah Dave, not been much locating of late, but Spring has finally sprung, so I am sure the wanderlust will kick in again soon...

Actually I live a couple of streets away from where Ealing filmed Jack Hawkins in THE MAN IN THE SKY, and they used the local aerodrome 5 mins from here. A lad at work's Dad was a volunteer fireman there and he and his crew appear in the film.

Funnily enough, in his autobiog, Jack Hawkins recalls that this was the only location in his career where his wife didn't go along with him !

And I STILL can't get hold of a flipping copy of the film.

You never know, it can be a very small world sometimes
Can't remember seeing THE MAN IN THE SKY but i'll keep an eye out for it over here. It might pop up on television one late night. If it does mate or if i find it elsewhere you'll be the first to know.

Cheers

Would those be the Kaleidoscope events you're referring to? I've often meant to go along to those, but since I've become aware of them they've always clashed withDerby playing at home so I've not been able to attend any.
