I was once told the difference between the Brummie and Black Country accent was in the way garage was pronounced - "Gar-aarge" or "Garridge". |

Bob Hoskins did a good job of a black country accent in Felicia's Journey. The film as a whole is worth watching as well.
In fact I was born and raised in the Wolverhampton - Dudley area so I've enjoyed reading this thread. Its been quite a few years since I've been back there so its always amusing to be reminded of how people spake proper. Oh well off to watch 'The Grimleys' I think. A top notch comedy of school life and teenage longing set in Dudley in the seventies. Features Noddy Holder in the cast and priceless dialogue such as "Allo doll, fancy a drive down Gornal!" That's how to impress a girl! |

Another couple of everyday expressions from uncles and aunts which I find myself still using. If the weather looks crap: "It's looking a bit black over Bill's mothers!" If you've gorra nangover: "I woke up this mornin' with an 'ead like blind cobbler's thumbs!" |

If you want thick British accents, they don't come much thicker than in the 1971 television presentation of "Cold Comfort Farm". It's available through Acorn Media (which has their own website) and here's an Amazon.com link http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...411334?v=glance for it and video is in NTSC format.
Acorn Media is putting a lot of shows that aired on PBS (such as this one) Masterpiece Theater and Mystery in the 1970s on VHS and DVD. I've watched their offering of Lord Peter Wimsey stories starring Ian Carmichael (courtesy of my local library). Apparently "Cold Comfort Farm" was the premiere show for Masterpiece Theater. To hear the patter of horsey feet. Thanks For The Buggyride recorded by Percival Mackey |
