Default Films with a Football (Soccer) Connection

Thinking the other day about attempts portray our national sport. To my mind they have been largely unsuccessful. Why is this? What are your best and worst football films?

The worst has to be Escape to Victory (1981)

One good one is The Arsenal Stadium Mystery (1940)

"BLOOMFIELD" 1971. Richard Harris starred, co-directed and a writing credit as well. I've only seen this film once, not on screen but about 8 can's of it stacked in the corner of a corridor at Pinewood 20 odd years ago.

The best are ID and Alan Clarke's The Firm. Based more on those that follow the game and the pre-Taylor Report era they're both powerful character driven films.

Oh yes, The Firm with Gary Oldman in fine form.

I can thoroughly recommend 'Cup Fever' for anyone wanting a nostalgia trip. It appears on the Saturday Morning Pictures - The Best Of The Children's Film Foundation Vol.2. It stars a young Susan George as the football crazy sister of Barton United's 'cup feverish' captain 'Skipper'. Highlights include a training session with Manchester United, Bernard Cribbens being given the run-around and the teams coach 'Fatso' repeatedly banging his head on the dugout. Come on Barton......

Nobody rates Escape To Victory then. The Arsenal Stadium Mystery, When Saturday Comes and Mike Bassett: England Manager are others that come to mind. Those Glory Glory Days and World Cup: A Captain's Tale are interesting films made for television but have not made many reappearances.

Escape To Victory had some strong moments and could have been a classic, but came up a bit short on cinematic greatness. I thought Michael Caine did a great job (think - a mature Charlie Croker in the Great Escape) and of course there was Pele, the great!

There is a fun nostalgic scene in the TV movie "Sleepers" (1991) when Nigel Haver's and Warren Clarke's characters were at the 1966 World Cup.

Also from TV, one of the best episodes of Danger Man (Don't Nail Him Yet), Drake observes a suspect (John Fraser) at a match at Fulham.

I don't know about Hornby's "Fever Pitch" eventhough I like Arsenal.

A good novel and film on the 1966 World Cup is waiting to happen...

Don't forget Porridge (1979), which is basically a Clement and LeFrenais re-work of Escape To Victory.

And of course The Italian Job uses a football match in Turin as cover for the robbery.

One of the most memorable scenes in 'Kes' is the football match featuring PE teacher Brian Glover.

"Gregory's Girl"

Ah!
This film contains one of my favourite one liners ever.

When John Gordon Sinclair (Gregory) acerbically says:

"...Hurry Back....."

As someone he hates leaves the room!!!!

I still use it all the time!!!!!
BRILL!

In my book it is impossible to recreate the excitement of a real football match however... you have all just got to check out Shaolin Soccer. It is the craziest football movie centring on a bunch of shaolin moks with special powers. i.e. players can jump 60m in the air when going up for headers and kick a football so hard that the turf is scorched. Really excellent (especially if you watch it somewhat intoxicated!).

In the Till Death Us Do Part spin off movie Alf and Mike go to the world cup final in 66'.

In the sequel The Alf Garnett Saga, (a dire film no ) they go to a West Ham match and Bobby Moore makes a guest appearance in the pub after the game.
