Default What's Good For the Goose!

No need to explain the exclamation mark here I think! Yes "What's Good for the Goose" starring Norman Wisdom, Sally Geeson and the Pretty Things! I watched it again last week on TV, and I've still to get my head around it. Even in 1969, Norman was still very much a household name for slapstick, innocent (if slightly dated) humour. Yet he seems hopelessly cast in this mish-mash of a film. Equally, I can't see what market the film was out to capture. Too smutty for the kids, mums and dads, and yet far too tame for any sleazy audience looking for sexy thrills.

It is a remarkable film, but for all the wrong reasons. Although the Pretty Things do shine through, it has a truly dreadful script (although the soundtrack, bar the theme tune, is really good) But anyway, any thoughts on how this movie came to pass and if it did any business would be more than welcome. Given the era, I am kind of thinking it received an "X" certificate, which would have pleased few of the film's investors.

On a humorous note, I think it was Richard D who told me once, that a cheeky video film company in the 1980's packaged the film as a soft-porn movie with no mention of our Norman on the sleeve. I believe one could pick it up in sex shops at the time under the title "Girl Crazy" I've often pictured the long brown coat brigade's shock and horror as they loaded the video into their machines only to find old Norman dancing to the Pretty Things!

Best wishes

Simon Wells

As you say, it doesn't seem to know which market it's aiming at - but it misses all of them

There were a few films like this that just tried to get onto the "Swinging Sixties" bandwagon - but failed

She was a beauty, no doubt, but her bloody voice grated a bit.

Actually, I had serious hots for the film's co-star, Sarah Atkinson. What the hell happened to her?!

i seen the heavily edited version ,done no doubt to get a U cert ,and thought it was dreadful
the complete film when i eventually seen it was quite good though ? and not just for the reasons batman pointed out ! the whole film gelled together much better .

Yes - the film was heavily cut to get an A and then a U certificate and all of sally geeson's topless scenes bit the dust. I believe the UK DVD releases are still this cut version. Not sure where you'd find an uncut print.

That's essentially the film's problem, it was shot as an X but ended up released as a U. Mind you, who wants to see Norman Wisdom (55?) in bed with 19 year-old Sally Geeson - yeuch yeuch.
