Default Worst representation of the British/Britishness in films?

For me it would have to be that God-awful scene towards the end of Independence Day when ‘our’ pilots are in the desert spouting lines like, “Gosh, chaps! The Americans have found a way to lower the shields – it’s about bloody time!”

I hate that bit to this day.

The bit in Pearl Harbour where the Brit pilots thank Ben Affleck for winning the Battle of Britain for them.

That episode of Friends where someone gets a round of applause for "If it wasn't for us Americans you'ld all be speaking German" and no-one objects, let alone hits him.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

I bowed to the awful reviews that film got and chose never to see it. On hearing that, I'm glad I didn't!

Tim Roth in Made in Britain (1982) (TV)

I hope no-one mentions Jack Lemmon in Irma La Douce!

Yeah, that was pretty bad, but at least I didn't feel it was too patronising to the British - things like ID4, Pearl Harbour and that episode of Friends mentioned above I think are worse because they're a lot more condecending.

Does not count as Jack Lemmon played a French Policeman.

There's a lot of dignity in that, isn't there? Going out like a raspberry ripple.

Terry Thomas in It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World as Lt.Col. J. Algernon Hawthorne................... still hilariously funny in it's stereotypes though

Rude, antagonistic, tiresome, sarcastic, yet aloof and sensitive.. and those are my good points

Actually, the film wasn't that bad. Although Tora,Tora,Tora was better.

I agree Marky, I can't be doing with one-sided 'reviews' and if a Film takes my fancy and i'll go and see it regardless, Pearl Harbour is a bit shmaltzy admittedly but i quite enjoyed it and glad i saw it as it's meant to be seen.......BIG!

"Bones" did two equally cringe worthy episodes set in London. However at least their producers are consistant because Japan got the same treatment.
