Following on from the 'Most Moving' topic, what's your YESSS ! film ?

You know, the one that has you rooting for the underdogs all the way through, and by the end you are on the edge of the sofa, smiling your head off and punching the air as they come back from the brink...

A couple of examples of mine (both modern comedies) -

SAVING GRACE, when Grace pulls it off and can stay in her cottage

FULL MONTY - when the lads overcome redundancy and have a mad once in a lifetime moment (similarly for BRASSED OFF)

Never really got into the Full Monty
Mrs Smudge got me to watch it eventually.

To supplement that first post above - three wonderful YESS ! moments (tempered eventually, I'm afraid ) are when they pull off the jobs in THE LADYKILLERS : THE LAVENDER HILL MOB and THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN.

Liverpool vs AC Milan,

or on a less note, Ian Carmichael in School for Scoundrels and John Mills in Great Expectations.

An excellent YESS ! that, SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS - even though at the end of it I still had a grudging admiration for T-T's cad.

Yes to all three of those. Similarly, I'd add Calendar Girls and Waking Ned - that was a perfect delight.

I've never seen it nor wish to...I was recommended Brassed Off as well and was given a copy of the dvd to watch - that was a couple of years ago, and it gathers dust even as I type

I know I'll be accused of being wilfully obscure here, but the Harold Shaw version of Kipps (1920) has the best feel-good ending of any film I've seen....it's a cracking film, and everyone (that deserves to) lives happily ever after...

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

The League of Gentlemen when they pull off the job. Booo! Hiss! to the ending though

The breakout in Danger Within, and Peter Arne being dealt with.

The Yangtse Incident, the escape.

Oooops I'm giving away too much plot here

I've seen it three times now - the central performance (George K. Arthur) is one of real charm; the cinematography is wonderful for 1921, with clever use of trick camera work, and wonderful location filming in London, Felixstowe and the South East, of course only about ten years after the book is set.
Chaplin was shown the film on his visit to London in '21; he liked Arthur (who had a decent Hollywood career later), not so keen on the plot. He didn't tell the guy sat next to him, HG Wells....
Harold Shaw is almost forgotten now, but is an intriguing character, directing on four continents before his death in '26. and Kipps, at least, is great, one of the lost gems of British silent film.

one that always gets the goosebumps appearing is ZULU when the "men of harlech"song is gallantly done as the zulu attack in the final charge of the battle, which they withstand .

chin chin! do carry on with your mud pies!
