Okay Barbara, Here we go.

[snip]
To those I'll add...

Michael Powell:
65A Chester Square, London SW1
8 Melbury Road, London W14

Emeric Pressburger:
31 Ascot Court, Grove End Road, St John's Wood, London, NW8
42 Green Lane, Hendon, London NW4
72 Redington Road, Hampstead, London NW3
54 Eaton Square, London SW1
Shoemaker's Cottage, Aspall, Nr Stowmarket, Suffolk, IP14 6NY
(buried in Our Lady of Grace Church, Aspall)

I've got applications going through the system for English Heritage Blue Plaques for Michael at Melbury Road and Emeric at Eaton Square. If anyone wants to apply for Blue Plaques for any of the people that Ken mentioned then addresses are necessary.

Their houses at Chester Square and Eaton Square are within a few hundred yards of each other - but they weren't living there at the same time.

Steve

Dirk Bogarde also lived on Chester in the late 1940s once he had a Rank contract and could afford to move into his first real digs. He writes about finding the place in "Snakes and Ladders" and the fun of furnishing it with "treasures" he discovered in charity shops.

Do you know which number Chester Square and when he lived there?
I could look it up in John Coldstream's wonderful biography, but it's quicker to ask you .

Micky Powell moved from Chester Square to Melbury Road in about 1946/7
Emeric moved into Eaton Square in 1954.
The Olivier's lived downstairs in the same house (it was divided into flats) at 54 Eaton Square. There's already a Blue Plaque to Vivian Leigh there. There isn't one for Larry anywhere in London

More to follow.

Ken.
Thanks, Ken! This is like a walk back in history. What fun to reflect upon each name, for example Angela Baddeley, 4, Holmbush Road, London, SW.15. When Baddeley lived there in 1933, she had just made "Those Were the Days" with John Mills and Will Hays. I wonder if the cast ever had dinners at her place or if writer Frank Launder ever dropped by?If walls could talk.

Hi, Steve,

Bogarde was at 44 Chester in 1947. His path just crossed Micky's at Chester it seems. For readers at large, I hasten to add that Dirk included that address himself in Snakes, so I'm not letting any cats out of the bag, knowing full well his very private nature.

Best,

Barbara

Maybe. I know that the original posting suggested c1933 addresses but I think any actors' present addresses should not be posted.
Although I might like Amanda Mealing's as an exception!!

Another: Katie Johnson, whom I knew quite well, 20 Coten End, Warwick c 1954-5.

Part 2.

Donald Calthrop, 30, Charlotte Street, London, W.1
.............
Ken.
Thanks for part 2, Ken. I continue to enjoy checking on what some of the actors were doing in 1933. By coincidence, I was just talking about Donald Calthrop, who was born on 11 April, because some BritMovie members also had birthdays that day. In 1933, Calthrop appeared in seven films; the year before he was in "Rome Express." IMDB indicates that among his roles, Calthrop played the porter in "The Night Porter," except that it was the Sewell Collins' 1930 version and a comedy. But which photo accompanies the 1930 listing? A photo of Dirk Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling for the 1974 film "The Night Porter." Quite a mismatch.

Sadly, in 1940 Calthrop had a heart attack and died at only 52.

Best,

Barbara

The IMDb has a bit of a problem with titles of the same name where one of them has a DVD available on Amazon (their parent company). The IMDb system automatically searches Amazon to look for DVD links but at present it can't detect when they're actually different releases.

They have a similar problem with I Know Where I'm Going (2000) showing the DVD cover for I Know Where I'm Going (1945). We've told them and they're working on it.

Some 'useless' Donald Calthrop info. for you...Height, 5ft 8inches; hair, dark brown; eyes, blue.

Mr Calthrop's silent films were; 'Wanted A Widow' [16]; 'Altar Chains' [16]; 'Masks And Faces' [17]
'The Gay Lord Quex'[17]; 'Goodbye' [18]; 'Lord Nelson' [18]; 'Stage Stars Off Stage' [25]; 'Shooting Stars' [28] 'The Flying Squad' [29];'Clue Of The New Pin' [29], and his sound debut was in 'Blackmail' [29].

Steve. IMDb has a LOT of problems, not just with titles, but even more so with player's filmographies!

Any in particular? It's only as good as it is, and although it has some flaws it's the best resource available, because of the information provided by many of the film fans in this forum.

Steve. To be honest, I didn't realise that it was the fans who supply IMBd info. Now I know, I will offer to contribute re. early British film players, and early films.

We supply all the information for older films. The studios do all the more recent stuff. I've been doing it since about 1994 so if you have any questions, do ask.
