As an alternative to Brief Encounter, could I suggest Perfect Strangers, AKA Vacation From Marriage?? Made in 1945, set throughout the war, rather nicely deals with the estrangement that war could bring to couples, the changes war wrought, and the need to re-establish relationships once peace returned...and a cast to die for; Robert Donat, Deborah Kerr, Glynis Johns....
Deseves to be far better known IMHO...a witty script, well acted...albeit not as iconic as Brief Encounter...

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Blimey. Hadn't thought of Alfie but yes it is such an obvious choice - very possibly better than Blow Up as an accurate portrait of swinging London.

Perfect Strangers sounds very promising but is it on DVD?

What about Darling? I think it was considered quite startling on release, with its heartless, shallow heroine (Julie Christie) sleeping her way to an Italian principate via Dirk Bogarde and the inimitable Laurence Harvey. It's quite an acid take on certain aspects of London life at the time, too.

My brother just mentioned a TV play that caused quite a stir and is very relevant to changes in social attitudes 'The Naked Civil Servant'. Of course Quentin Crisp's story starts in the pre-war years but - as I recall- does proceed into more recent times.
