It just wouldn't have the same texture......that's partly the point; these creatures have always been there...in our unconscious, just below the surface, literally and figuratively. Was there much recording of Native American lore in the New York area in the early 18th C before they were displaced ?? There's something solid about a document...mind you 300 years is an eternity in US terms...

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Yes, there was quite a lot of recording of old lore. Some was written, much was just oral. The trouble is that none of the incomers paid it much attention.

The length of time that the legends go back doesn't really affect the story much. Just as long as they do go back.

Remember: The British think 100 miles is a long way.
The Americans think 100 years is a long time.

As long as they could take it back a couple of hundred years that's effectively "prehistoric".

I'm not saying that the film would have the same texture or subtlety.
I'm not saying that it's a good idea to remake it.
All I'm saying is that as a story, it could be set in many different places.

Fraid to say I think this film might be The Knowing and it's not a remake of Quatermass.
