Angry They're remaking Quatermass And The Pit!

"Alex Proyas is committed to remaking 'Quatermass and the Pit' for New Line."

This is the guy that directed I Robot with Will Smith in it...

Quaternass and the Pit is the epitomy of British filmmaking. It won't work remaking it. If it's not filmed in England, it definitely won't work!

I know there's been talk of remaking this film since the eighties, with John Carpenter - he would have done a good job at the time, but now films have changed. A Quatermass and the Pit with CGI?

I'm still trying to forget the diabolical "live" version of Quatermass the BBC did the other year.

Could be worse....... Uwe Boll anyone?

Starring Ice T as Professor Quatermass and Paris Hilton as Barbara Judd

Mondo Esoterica - Cult and obscure DVD reviews from Spaghetti Westerns to Hammer Horror.

They would never go for a choice as good as Ice T.

If Larry Cohen was to remke it with Yaphet Kotto as Quatermass I bet it would be quite good.

I can just see Will Smith as Professor Quatermass, and I can see the American distribitors changing the title so people don't think it's a film about quarters.

Wasn't this announced about 7 years ago, and then died after Nigel Kneale told them that they couldn't have the 'Quatermass' name? If so then it never came to anything. The project was renamed 'The Legacy' and was supposed to of had 'Quatermass' being replaced by a New York Cop. I think also that the Martian's were supposed to leap into action - munching their way through New Yorkers left, right and centre. If this is the case then it's a dead Proyas project.

Proyas was the Aussie director of Dark City, one of the best SF films ever made - also I, Robot, one of the worst. He's currently believed to be considering a sequel to Dark City. Isn't the possible remake of Q3 old news?

First I'd heard about it. Just a little shocked that such a classic is going to get the Hollywood remake treatment, that's all.

Why not? As a story, it could work anywhere. There's very little in it that is particularly British.

Althought that's not to say that I approve of anyone trying to remake it.

I would love to have read Dan O'Bannon's script for the once propposed remake of The Quatermass Xperiment - according to the Andy Murray book on Nigel Kneale Into the Unknown, the finale was going to be set in an Atomic Power Plant, and set in the USA. I too don't see why any of the Quatermass couldn't be refilmed in America, as long as they adhere to the original ideas, and don't lose so many characters along the way. I think they all deserve a few quid throwing at the stories too, and although I quite liked the recent BBC4 remake of The Quatermass Experiment
, it was a bit of a let down at the end (I.e No Creature), and although the make up used for Astronaut Victor Carroon looked good in the publicity shots, actual showings of his transformation were brief.

Andrew Tiernan as Victor Carroon in the 2005 BBC4 remake of The Quatermass Experiment.

With the exception of that wonderful sequence in the archives....local libraries, the archives of Westminster Abbey, the centuries-old reports of mysterious goings on back to the Roman Conquest....bit tricky to do that in New York...

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

I don't recall Roman Conquests, but I think it could be easily transferred, maybe going back to the times of the native Americans i.e Indians.

They do have some libraries and old churches in New York and you just substitute Indian legends for mysterious goings on back to the Roman Conquest.

Next :)

The London underground scenes, Hobb's End - it just feels so British when I watch it, I can't see it working in America. They don't know the meaning of the word subtle.
