Yes, there was quite a lot of recording of old lore. Some was written, much was just oral. The trouble is that none of the incomers paid it much attention.
The length of time that the legends go back doesn't really affect the story much. Just as long as they do go back.
Remember: The British think 100 miles is a long way.
The Americans think 100 years is a long time.
As long as they could take it back a couple of hundred years that's effectively "prehistoric".
