However, I quite like 'Lifeforce' - and no not because the leading lady wanders around the screen naked most of the time. I studied life drawing at Art College... its old hat. 'Lifeforce' had its moments... I especially liked the opening scenes in space where the space ship is found in the tail of a comet... reminded me a little of Arthur C. Clarke's 'Rendezvous with Rama'. It wasn't a subtle movie, and often quite crass... very often quite crass, but its OK and I doubt its the worst horror movie ever made by the Brits. |

The problem was two fold with CREEP. Firstly the female protagonist was so unsympathetic and just plain nasty that you didn't care what happened to her, in fact you hoped she'd get done in pretty quickly to get shut of her. Secondly I felt they missed an opportunity to use the underground setting to it's maximum effect. Look how succesfully Deathline and American Werwewolf in London used the underground. They made it really frightening and unsettlting. Creep didn't manage this one bit. |

'Alien', 'The Birds', 'Duel', just three terrific movies where the monsters are not explained... and to great effect. I think one of the flaws of modern movies is the need to tie up all loose ends and explain everything. I rather enjoyed 'Creep', but then, I tend to be quite forgiving of movies. |

It was made very cheaply so its production values leave a lot to be desired. But although Powell had been making huge international blockbusters he could also go back to making films cheaply and making the best of what he had available - like using himself and his son in the scenes showing Mark as a boy. Some of the costumes are actually the clothes of Powell and his family! And it is a very unsettling film, intentionally so. There is enough reason in that for many people to not like it. Steve |

I first noticed this place a while ago and always have a wry smile whenever I walk past. Don't know if I'd go in for a passport photo though...

I saw PEEPING TOM when it was originally released in France and immediately loved it. I think it's a true masterpiece. I was unaware, in 1960, that it was put down by most of British critics (the same critics which also disliked the first Hammer horrors and wrote that they was good for garbage box, I presume...). Thanks to people like Martin Scorcese, the movie has been fully re-evaluated (correct word ?), happily enough. Too late for the great Michael Powell, unfortunately.
Far being "ordure" (a term I would never use for any film - excepted a real snuff movie), "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" and its sequel are pure gold, among the best ever made by Vincent Price in England. Even "bad" British movies, like for instance "Fire Maiden from Outer Space" can be quite enjoyable. |
