Taken from 2 recent posts ..... so, maybe, but not all, and I have not seen any evidence that those who do like the film have taken umbrage at these or other, similar, comments.

Thanks to people like Martin Scorcese, the movie has been fully re-evaluated (correct word ?), happily enough. Too late for the great Michael Powell, unfortunately.
Far being "ordure" (a term I would never use for any film - excepted a real snuff movie), "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" and its sequel are pure gold, among the best ever made by Vincent Price in England.
Even "bad" British movies, like for instance "Fire Maiden from Outer Space" can be quite enjoyable.
Peeping Tom always was well liked in France. By the critics and the public.
They also seem to have taken well to Gone to Earth (1950) [La Renarde] which although it wasn't hammered by the critics here, was never hugely popular.

I have always wonder if Peeping Tom should be classified as a horror film. I know it's a hard genre to define but however you define it Peeping Tom doesn't seem to fit any definition. There's no blood and gore, you don't even see the dead bodies of the victims. But by involving the audience so closely, we are watching a voyeur watching and killing his victims, it strikes deeper than any "mere" horror film and I think it's much more unsettling than any Hammer film.

Powell did know that Peeping Tom and the other films had been rediscovered and restored where necessary and was very pleased (and a little surprised) by all the attention paid to his work in his latter years.

I have loved 'Peeping Tom' from the very first time I saw it. I'd have no problem saying if this was not the case. I'm not a person who tends to follow the crowd unless I agree with the crowd.

Have to say I love Peeping Tom. As for those who dare to disrespect the legendary Dr Anton Phibes, shame on you! I'll send his clockwork musicians round. The Phibes films, Theatre of Blood and of course Witchfinder General are some of the best work dear old Vincent has done. Don't get me started about The Monster Club though....

I agree with that... however, I never much liked Vincent Price movies in general. As an actor, I never believed in the reality of many of his characters - generally speaking.

I adored Vincent Price in 'Edward Scissorhands' and I loved his voice over for 'Thriller' and 'Vincent' and I really enjoyed 'Theatre of Blood' especially where he fed Robert Morley the poodles (only time I really believed in his trademark persona), I also appreciated and believed his roles in 'Witchfinder General' and 'The Pit and the Pendulum' which were dryer than usual, although I don't think as highly of those movies as most do.

I only have dim memories of 'The Monster Club'... I don't know... maybe I do Vincent Price a disservice but I never really gelled with most of the performances I saw of him.

Like many episodic films, The Monster Club has quite a lot to recommend it. There are usually some episodes that you like even if you don't like others

I know it has a following but it is quite dreadful; largely due to the weak vignettes and the cheesy nightclub framing.

Cheesy it may be, but where else can you see that iconic group The Pretty Things?

What about The Hole? On imdb it says it's a mixture of genres besides horror.

Whatever, I thought it was absolutely dire.

And whoever said The Descent before, I love that film. It did actually frighten me to a point. Sort of.

Monster Club will forever linger in the memory not least for the unforgettable sight of the elderly and almost decrepit John Carradine disco dancing in the eponymous establishment. And then there's Anthony Steele's cameo where he seems to have forgotten to act. The appearance by the Pretty Things is a bonus even if Phil May does have to sing the line 'I was out with my ghoul friend...'

'The Hole' wasn't the greatest movie ever made... it wasn't much good, but it wasn't the worst. I'd say 'The Descent' is one of the best of recent years British or otherwise.

Trouble with 'The Descent' is that there is a real risk its mixed up with 'The Cave' which was truly dire.
