It depends which version you've seen, the British ending is ambiguous but the US cut makes it clear his manuscript seals his fate. Either way, in comedy it's pantomime villainy and the targets (Aristocracy and Banks) are not going to garner much sympathy from the audience.

Hi Jmills88,
This is not a great help to your study, but when some people criticised the ending of The Italian Job as ambiguous,it was a way the film makers showed a bit of sympathy to the villains by not letting them seen get caught, but on the other edge they should not be seen to get away with it.
Similiar to the fate of Dennis Potter in Kind Hearts And Coronets - for what he has done to the Ascoyne family is mass murder, but he did it in revenge for his mother. So we him set free at the end,but we are spared the consequences for when his memoirs is disocvered.
Villains in those days were sanitised obviously for censorship, the reality was perhaps just as bad as it is now,but far less than the epidemic of crime that plagues us and in those days,I suspect, the law was respected and on our side.
Not as useful as other comments, but that's my ten cents worth.

Wasn't Dennis also in The Blue Remembered Hills Mob? And Pennies from Pimlico?

So JMills88, has your critical research module been submitted yet? Do we get to see it?

Is PORTREY a word ?

I found out recently that one of my friends degree course was based around watching a few films. I don't want to be disrespectful to her or you but I was surprised that she got a degree for watching films that I saw as a kid. She didn't know much about the films and most of her opinions were straight out of the book. Modern education Baah humbug ;-)

I think I would watch each film a few times and then study other films made around the same time or by the same director/actor/company.

It would also be worth putting them into context by looking at the social and economic conditions at the time. What was the average wage, was there a death penalty etc.

I was chatting to a guy in the office. He doesn't own a telly and had no idea who James Robertson Justice was. It turns out that he has hardly ever watched some essential British films. He has only ever seen one Carry On which unfortunately was "Convenience" and that put him off the whole experience, hardly surprising.

I now think courses like this are a good idea but perhaps they should start in Infant school.

I'm not sure. I see what "educational offerings" are targeted towards infants! Let's protect them for at least a little while. We seriously restrict our TV time because of that.
