Default The Leather Boys

I have just noticed a 1964 film called "The Leather Boys" principally because Rita Tushingham is in the cast ( a former heart throb!) I have never watched it, is it any good?

Apparently The Leather Boys was shelved by the industry because of its gay subplot until a media campaign got it released, although the story would fit nicely into Eastenders these days. With shades of A Kind of Loving, Colin Campbell's marriage to Rita Tushingham breaks up because of her frivolous nature and he moves into a "laddish" relationship with Dudley Sutton who turns out to be gay. Of more interest these days is the depiction of the contemporary biker scene around the Ace Cafe at the London end of the M1.

I was visiting posteropolis vintage movie posters: enter to 'steal' some movie-poster artwork for DVD labels, and that fellow has his own genre listings, including one called

Trashy

I love it. It's perfect. It has these trashy B-pix (not like those GREAT B-movies with radioactive giants and things like that ). No, I'm talking the REAL trashy stuff. It's just great.

I might have to start using "Trashy" as a genre in my collection. Lord only knows with MY husband still collecting films, Trashy is the perfect name for them!

Default Leather Boys

This film is now available on DVD R2 Orbit Media ORB 10132 in full widescreen and much better qulaity than the old VHS issue.
The film was made on location and at Butlins Bognor but the interiors of the chalet were at Merton Park. It is also excellent for the locations.
About 20 years ago I had a long chat with Colin Campbell and he told me all about the making of the film and how Sidney Furie wanted him to go to the USA to promote the film. Colin has had a roller coaster career and when I spoke to him all that time ago he had a small part in the Wexford TV series as a police sergeant. He told me that he got far more for those small parts than he was ever paid for The Leather Boys. The film was nominated for the Golden Globe 1966.

Sidney Furie mentions The Leather Boys many times during his commentary on The Young Ones DVD.

"I thought I had to shoot Germans, not chew 'em"
