Indiscreet
I was about sixteen in 1958 and making a fairly regular visit to the Regal cinema Kings Road Hammersmith. When I arrived at the door for the evening performance a few things stood out in my mind, first the narrow red carpet leading from the door along the reception and upwards as far as I could see. There seemed to be more staff and more smarly dressed than usual. The girl at the box odffice gave me a rather disparaging look that I had not noticed before,a sort of 'is he smart enough' look. I think I asked for a one and six if I remember, not the cheapest and was told by the newly efficient girl that all tickets were ninepence this evening. Puzzled I paid and made my way to the auditorium. For the life of me I cant remember the films showing it was a normal double feature with newsreel etc.
If i recall what happened then, at the end of the performance the curtains closed, the lights came up and as most of the audience rose a loud slightly anxious vioice voice asked us to remain seated. No idea what was happening the voice became a man on stage saying we were fortunate to be at a uk(world even)premiere. Hardly knowing what this meant, spotlit on the stage were what looked like Cary Grant and Grace Kelly together with two very elderly(to me anyway) man and wife who were famous names to me even then as I think producers or directors, but since unfortunately forgotten.
Car Grant and Grace Kelly (for this was they)spoke from the stage as did the others mainly talking about the film Indiscreet and this was followed by a screening of the film. I have never since heard anything of this, does anyone know any more. For example why Hammersmith, why no publicity? Can any one throw some light on this?
