The cast includes Robert Newton, Alec Guiness, Kay Walsh, Anthony Newley, Peter Bull, Diana Dors, Hattie Jacques, Michael Ripper, John Howard-Davies, Maurice Denham, Francis Sullivan and even Arthur Mullard and Erik Chitty (Please Sir) were in it. It features some of the most striking backdrops of Victorian London ever created, sinister characters, gin soaked squalor and you can almost smell the stench of the river and the rot in the streets.

Yes of course it's David Lean's 1948 masterpiece Oliver Twist. The Dickens' story most of us have heard over and over again throughout our lives, but this version is pure gold (the only let down being Alec Guiness' false Fagin nose which looks like the old Guiness adverts with the macaw) . If you haven't seen the film then do so!
I with you on this one,Sam it is a masterpiece.

Non- Brit,I plump the trilogy of films directed by Marcel Pagnol -Marius/Fanny/Cesar.

A pedant writes....Pagnol directed the third of the trilogy of his plays....our own (!) Alexander Korda directed the first, Marc Allegret the second....but yes, they're great, and amongst my favourite films of that era.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Is this trilogy available on DVD then? If so, where from?

Ooooooh do I detect loads of film purists here :

'What is your one greatest film of all time?'....kind of depends on what criteria you use to define 'greatest'.

If you mean in terms of direction, cinematography, set design, or, god forbid, acting....then I would have to give the question a lot more thought.

However, if we are talking in terms of pure entertainment value and impact the film had on me, then I would have to say without doubt 'Where Eagles Dare'.

Saw it when it was released in 1968 (aged 6) with my grandmother and my sis...who was 4! (I think it had a AA cert on release, but was then recut to an A), so how the devil we got in to see it I'll never know. But of course, for me at that age it was manna from heaven.

It's not brilliantly put together, there are numerous continuity errors, but the action and the twisting plot more than compensate. In my book a hugely entertaining film that I must have seen way over 50 times and does take no.1 slot in my DVD collection.

There's no need to kneel, I'm a very democratic sort of lord.

Same answer in my case. I think many of us will have that one film that just clicks for us. It is like finding true love, some of us find it, some end up settling.

Number 1 has to be Zulu, but there are so many more great films it would be hard to list them all. I suppose my idea of a great film is one I can sit down and watch anytime, so that would include:

The Godfather
Far From the Madding Crowd
The Dam Busters
Them! (honestly, I love that film!)
The Italian Job

So many more........
