I saw that one just recently for the first time...OMG! I found it too daring for a James Bond theme, but then again, there wasn't any space-ship whizzing around in order to pass it under sci-fi. I wondered why I couldn't take it seriously even on entertainment level?! I just kept uttering: Nooo way! C'mon! I can't believe...

I know many appreciate this flick, so I keep wondering what did I miss? Perhaps it's that instant you referred onto few lines before: criteria. Certainly many, apart from technicalities. And certainly many excellent flicks. What eventually hits one could be that specific psychological veil or net which synchronizes with one's brainwave frequency.

The Great Escape
Made me cry.
(This is not a british movie but with great british actors!)

I also like "Gift Horse" and "The Way Ahead".

These things are always dependent on the individual but for me it is, and always will be, this British classic:

Casablanca. Still, after all these many many years, my favourite film. I've watched it countless times, and still it's lost none of it's charm or magic for me. An almost perfect film, it has pretty much everything I could possibly ask for; romance, intrigue, action, comedy, a good tune, a script that crackles with some of the snappiest dialogue ever to bless our screens - all that, and Humphrey Bogart and Claude Raines, too! It don't get much better than this.

all out of gum. . .

If it had to be only one (too many films, too little space to list them all!) it would be Separate Tables.
I have fond memories of watching it many times with my mum, and dad walking into the room with the box of tissues... earlier each time! It became a ritual for our family every time the film aired on TV. David Niven's portrayal of the Major... and in particular, the scene where he squares himself to face the other hotel guests as he walks into the dining room is why he won an oscar for that role.

Was that after Kes, or the reason he got that part, do you know?

Couldn't see a clue on imdb, so maybe I've got the wrong guy.

That sounds a bit like Ripping Yarns, which is being re-screened on one of the Freeview channels.

But I could be wrong.

That was the wonderful David Swift in Another Sunday and Sweet F.A., written by Jack Rosenthal, directed by Michael Apted, for ITV 1972...

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

I keep reading all these great titles. I could never name one. Maybe my Top 5.

I think I've got my Top 5 narrowed down to about a 100 films.

Well, no more than 200. Probably. Maybe. I'm almost certain I could list no more than 300 in my Top 5.

Of course, if I had a couple of really BIG boxes to take with me on that deserted island (amazingly equipped with electricity for my DVD player and TV), then I MIGHT be able to get 400 films into my Top 5.

I could quite easily name my top 5 films, but competition would be fierce for my top 10 and I would not even attempt top 20.

Sunday League footie !! Yay!! It had to be of course......

And as recent as 1972.... I'm not as old as I had feared....

Many thanks Penfold. That old play has crossed my mind more than once over the years. Nice to pin it down, and such a great title....

I wonder how Brian Glover got in there.......
