Default Greatest film of all time.

Has to be Great Expectations, or the original Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim

My favourite all-time film is HE WHO GETS SLAPPED with Lon Chaney, directed by Victor Sjostrom. The first MGM movie, I wish they were all like that one.

From Britain, AMOLAD and BLACK NARCISSUS and THE RED SHOES are high up, along with THE THIRD MAN. Also THE KNACK and THE DEVILS and DON'T LOOK NOW. If I had to pick one, probably AMOLAD.

For me it's A Matter of Life and Death, followed by The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, and A Canterbury Tale.

... and I Know Where I'm Going! and The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus and ...
Are we beginning to see a trend here?

Although all of those are on any "top films" list for me I find it hard to put them in any order apart from having AMOLAD in the number 1 position.

My favourite British film is The Dark Man .... not because it is the greatest film ever made, but because it is a fine example of British B thrillers, which I love. Very atmospheric with windy beaches, creepy woods, seedy boarding houses and effective performances from Natasha Parry and Maxwell Reed. I used to watch Brighton Rock (a great film) over and over again but have transferred my allegiance to The Dark Man and all things Max.

My favourite non-British film is On The Waterfront. Pefect cast, wonderful script, great locations and sublime music. I first saw this as a teenager and it simply overwhelmed me. I still watch it regularly and it is still a very powerful film.

Bats.

For me it's The Third Man by Carol Reed but then I would have to place many of the Archer's films very close and then you have to think of several David Lean films as well.

Of course there are also the Ealing classics and then maybe some of the early Hitchcock's could quite easily make a strong case.

The Third Man definately has style, story and ambiguity, things I consider to be important when talking about greatness and films together.Perhaps it's the improvised Welles speech that strikes me of the greatness I was witnessing when he came out with "....in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

Cheers Simon

Great speech. Shame it's wrong.
The cuckoo clock is a product of the Black Forest region of Germany

..yes may have taken his Mark Twain a bit to literally, still great speech as you say copied it from Mussolini. I've got Switzerland down for beer and cheese although they did do the chalet style of cuckoo clocks in the late 19th century.

Is Switzerland not the home of precision time pieces like Rolex and Omega etc? hence the term "like a swiss watch"

That bit is wrong too, the Borgias actually had power in Italy for about 15 years and in that time they got rid of most of the feuding between the papal states and established a form of democratic provincial governament that is still in use today. They did use a bit of force now and again, but they were a lot less bloodthirsty than the despots they got rid of. All that stuff about incest and mass poisonings was fabricated by Italian historians to discredit the Borgias who were their most hated enemy ... Spaniards!
