Hi all! I've had a reply from Sir Gerald....erm quite concise as you can see...(name and address removed to protect the innocent!..[attachmentid=5].... you can read the report here....please let me know if you can find the British film subject matter, because I haven't yet! Anyway when we do find it, we can then work out what to do next...I hope this is of interest folks! Regards, Decks.
Good try, Decks.
The Right Honourables wrote mostly about regulation mostly regarding competitive aspects with independents, public financing, adult content regulation and control.
The following may be the location for any follow up:
214. Programme production is the BBC's core activity representing the great bulk of expenditure. However, initiatives to increase efficiency in this area (without compromising quality) have not been the subject of clear reporting; giving rise to the suspicion that the issue has not topped the agenda of an organisation enjoying a guaranteed level of public money. It is a matter of more than anecdotal evidence that the BBC regularly sends large numbers of journalists and other staff to cover the same news or sporting event, with separate BBC outlets often replicating each other's work. While direct comparisons with the print media, or other broadcasters, would be invidious, we believe that the BBC should seek to make further efficiencies in this area.
215. We also note that the BBC has been criticised for programme acquisition,[182] including of Hollywood blockbusters, for far above their 'market' value, when in competition with other terrestrial broadcasters without, therefore, a demonstrable gain in terms of public value.
216. In 2003 the BBC Governors reported that "Over the next year programme production costs need to be benchmarked to determine if further efficiencies are achievable. We have also agreed with the Executive to look for ways to conduct a thorough review of effectiveness-based, value for money measures of BBC performance." They themselves emphasised this in going on to say: "It is timely now to conduct a thorough benchmarking exercise to ensure that the BBC's programme costs are justified in relation to the value and quality of its programmes, as compared with other broadcasters."[183]
Article 215 only discusses a criticism of having too much Hollywood content, it does not discuss a national film conservation or showing solution.
The following article discusses trimming of costs. It is here that it might be followed up that to further the goal of this article, the BBC should consider showing the finest of British film catalogues.
Furthermore, I would follow up with the MPs in charge of this committee.
Best,
Gibbie
Well done Decks ! A valiant effort.
Nice to see that the Rt. Hon Mr. Kaufman is working so hard for our money
Wonder how much that works out pro-rata on a line-by-line basis ?
Anyway, if you care for another try (glad to chip in again) as far as I understand it, the Beeb-Beeb-Ceeb, as a Public body, can be held wholly responsible to answer requests under the new Freedom Of Information Act.
Anybody, anywhere (inc Gibbie ! ) can ask ANYTHING ; as long as they do it in writing.
They either have to point you to a directly relevant publication authored and published by them, or answer directly within a given timescale.
I have been tempted to write and ask about their policy on trailers and voicing-over credits...

Mmm... needs further investigation, perhaps wrting to MP's as Gibbie suggests or, finding out who to write to at the Beeb as well Smudge, leave it with me and I'll see what I can come up with....in the meantime any more suggestions will be gratefully received!regards, Decks.
Valient effort Decks but it looks like a fobbed off reply from a secretary. Back to the drawing board with our thinking caps on.
His signature's almost as easy to read as mine!!
Well done Decks

Hhmmm, got some ideas bubbling.
I should write my MP.

Ok chaps, this is what I've done.... there is a new complaints procedure at the BBC from Feb 1st. It basically has to respond to a complaint, which if unsatifactory goes to a completely independant body for examination, so I've written a letter of complaint along tha same lines as before, but have stated that I have written to Gerald Kaufman regarding the matter and he has replied stating it was dealt with at the charter review. So, I've also asked them to expand the review findings and state if the communications bill that gives Ofcom more power is correct., so now we wait yet again.......! I'll let you know as soon as I get a replyregards, Decks.
Keep at it Decks!
If Smudge can find out how I can get citizenship (I wonder if they can retronaturalize genetic Britains?), I will vote for you for MP and perhaps the Duke of Cornwall will give you his title for public conservation!

Indeed. Transfer of titles, still to my knowledge, fortunately doesn't include spouses.

From today's Screen Daily. Looks promising but time will tell
UK Government urges BBC to support local films.
Adam Minns in London 03 March 2005 04:00
The UK Film Council has welcomed the Government’s Green Paper on the review of the BBC’s Royal Charter, which urges the BBC to show British films to wider audiences.
The paper, an outline of points for consultation before a more concrete set of proposals is published in a White Paper later this year, calls for the public broadcaster to establish a film investment strategy. Last year’s all-party select committee review of the BBC, which fed into this week’s paper, also called for the BBC to boost its commitment to home-grown film.
“The BBC should accept the Select Committee recommendation to put together a film investment strategy to ensure that the best UK films are shown to a wider television audience,” the Green Paper stated.
John Woodward, the UK Film Council’s chief executive, said: “This is a real step forward - the Green Paper underlines for the first time the importance of the BBC having a proper film investment strategy to champion British films. The [Department for Culture, Media & Sport] is now joining up broadcasting and film policy in a way that’s never been done before.”
