I always the concept for this movie was a good one, but the first one was poorly conceived. There was too much 'Bean' type stunt humour, which is basically never funny (When will they learn) and not enough banter in the dialogue, impressions and dialogue timing is what Atkinson does best, so lets hope the script allows him to breath, and isn't another mundane script filled a few lame gags, even less funny ones linking a series of not very exciting set pieces inbetween. I won't even comment on Mr Bean.

Bean (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia cost $18 million and made $250 million. I doubt whether the production team are too bothered about the critics

One thing to remember is that a large percentage of the audience for this sort of film won't be English-speakers. A witty script isn't always your first priority when your watching it dubbed.

be that as it may, Four Weddings was deamed to be too weak for British audiences and went on to be a spectacular sucess. It relied less on visual gags and more on the witty and well written script, so there is no reason why JER shouldn't have the same tools to hand, if it is well written in the first place.
Also those figures were global, it could have achieved far more, had it actually been any good.

I'm glad to see it seems to be a success. I'm not sure why I'm glad, I just am.
