The Observer gave away "Don't Look Now" last year. Most surprising giveaway must have been "Donnie Darko: Special Edition" by The Sunday Times.
Finally got round to watching the original The Browning Version DVD that was given away with the Sunday Telegraph and I was blown away with how brilliant it was. It just pips The Long Good Friday that was given away with The Sun of all things a few years back for the sole fact that The Browning Version is very difficult to get hold of DVD.

I have yet to see Don't Look Now although I keep meaning to. Shame I missed that freebie. I too was surprised by the Donnie Darko giveaway. Must be one of the most recent films to be given away.
Kind Hearts and Coronets, given away with the Sun. They did a whole week's worth of Ealing classics. Free Ealing. How cool is that? The Times also gave away the Godard Sympathy For The Devil film, although I always throught that was called One Plus One ( maybe I'm getting it mixed up with something else ).
Mike Leigh`s High Hopes was given away with The Guardian last november.Unfortunatly I didn`t find out about it until a few weeks after but this must be one of the best films to be given away with a newspaper.
These still can be found cheaply on e-bay. I managed to get The Browning Version and Pygmalion for 50p both.
The Mail on Sunday gave away The Ipcress File - in widescreen throughout - and Brief Encounter on ONE disk a few years ago - that takes a bit of beating I think!
It's no wonder I hate this thread... IPCRESS FILE doesn't even have a recent Region-1 release! It gets shown once a year on TV and if you're lucky enough to have a newborn that wakes up just in time, you can watch it. Whew... there ARE miracles, after all...
Sorry about that Christine. I left one bit out too - my neighbours gave me the disk, so I didn't even have to buy the newspaper!
I just bought "The Go-Between" on Ebay, not realizing it was a Daily Telegraph giveaway. It is a marvellous film which I had not seen since it came out in 1970.
Of course, I don't know what else has been used as a premium, apart from the few mentioned on this thread, but I would think that TG-B might qualify as one of the best.
I'm with Christine on this, you resident Brits are sooooo lucky. And as for being given dvds without buying the paper--well![]()
I actually went out and bought The Telegraph for that giveaway. Has anyone ever looked more ravishing than Julie Christie in that film? - I think only Jenny in Walkabout can rival her.
The Daily Mail gave away free DVDs of classic British films about two years ago. Mostly from Ealing Studios heyday - Kind Hearts and Coronets, Lavender Hill Mob, etc. There were about twelve in the full collection.
