We got LINK in last week and finally watched it last night. Good enough, and while it lacks KONGA's "destroy all toy-buildings by man-in-ape-costume" accolades, it does fit in well with the other Lab-Monkey films, as predicted.

I wonder if Elis Shue realized then or now how lucky she was to be with some of those extraordinary older-generation actors.

Saw Link when it first came out and a few times since and I like the film quite a lot. The fact that it got a rather luke warm reception upon its original release (and is now almost forgotten) was IMHO largely due to misguided expectations - trying to market the film as a horror shocker so that it would appeal to the slasher and gore audiences of the Eighties was simply wrong. The film is no masterpiece but it would have deserved to be judged as a psychological horror thriller; as a gore fest it was and is sadly lacking.

Stay away from the German dvd, though. Apart from being the wrong format, MCP is not known for quality releases; in fact, when I checked I found several complaints about the picture and sound quality of this release. Essentially, MCP released this dvd to cash in on the fact that Link has a substantial cult following in Germany and is shown quite regularly on TV, albeit on the commercial channels (i.e. with ad breaks), so there is a market for a cheap uninterrupted version of the film.

Link der Butler - this might help you get some impression of the version, though I cannot guarantee anything as I have not used the link (no pun intended) myself.

I'd say 'gladly lacking' since most gore fest movies aren't worthy of the title 'Horror movie' but more like 'Disgusting Movie'.

I'm not opposed to gore... but movies that go out of their way to be gorey end up very very poorly made... going for disgusting images and cheap shocks as opposed to atmosphere and suspence which require more talent to accomplish.

Several movies deserve fame but lack it due to bad advertising (aiming for the wrong audience)... 'Link' and 'Willard' both spring to my mind.

I've got the American DVD release, BTW. Having 'Link' in my collection is worth abiding the NTSC stutter.
