Father Came Too!

Watching Father Came Tooprompted me to ask if there were a series of films made with Stanley Baxter (an underrated genius) and James Robertson Justice in similiar roles?

Although they have different character names the characters Stanley Baxter and James Robertson Justice play in 'Father Came Too' are similar to the ones they played in the previous years Ken Annakin film 'The Fast Lady'. Leslie Phillips is in both films and all three are also in 'Very Important Person' and 'Crooks Anonymous' but in the end I would say that really only 'The Fast Lady' and 'Father Came Too' go together. More as companion films rather than a series.

I know it'd be too sickly sweet for a modern audience, but I have no shame in nominating it as one of my favourites of all time. Although Stanley Baxter and JRJ played blinders in that one, for me, it was Leslie Philips who stole the show (as he did in The Fast Lady).



I'm not sure I've got a favorite scene - there is too much of it I like.



It was (very loosely) remade, I belive, as 'The Money Pit'.

I've been informed that I was wrong in stating the above. The Money Pit actually being a remake of Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House.



Father Came Too appears to be an English variation on an existing theme. A very good one it is though!

Having enjoyed The Fast Lady time and time again with a cast of greats including James Robertson-Justice, Stanley Baxter, Kathleen Harrison, Julie Christie and Leslie Philips I notice that the same writers brought out a follow-up film Father Came Too! with some of the same cast.



I'm tempted to buy a copy but has anyone here seen it and is it as good as The Fast Lady?

I have a copy of the DVD and I am pleased to say it is very good indeed.



To my mind, there is all the wit, the stupidity and the great English farce, with everyone involved playing their parts well. Watch out for a "bit" performance from Ronnie Barker and even Kenneth Cope (although he isn't deceased in this story!)



I do like Jame Robertson Justice as the overbearing father and Stanley Baxter plays the brow-beaten husband very well indeed. Not forgetting Leslie Phillips, who is the estate agent and aspiring actor. (Do you know of an estate agent who will not only sell you the property, but also help(?) you referurbish it?



If you liked "The Fast Lady", I think you will enjoy "Father Came Too", even minus Kathleen Harrison.

It's part of a series of films with Stanley Baxter JRJ and Leslie Philips which also includes Crooks Anonymous (though JRJ is only in a cameo in that one) and all four films are splendid examples of English throwaway humour.

Father Came Too is every bit as good - but I am biased and my favourite film is Crooks Anonymous.



I can also fully recommend Very Important Person. Again with James Rbertson Justice, Leslie Phillips and Stanley Baxter.

I have both films and they are equally as enjoyable a real classic.
