C, I am ALWAYS hoping this is the case! I saw DIAL M in 3D and spent years thinking that re-release would herald a new coming of 3D.

When we saw POLAR EXPRESS in 3D, again I thought, "Well, surely now, this WILL mean most every film will be done in 3D..."

We see a lot of the IMAX films in 3D, but "a lot" is only relative - 3 out of 6? 3 out of 10? IMAX is so great that I don't really mind the 'loss' of 3D, until I see it again and then we leave the theatre pumped for 3D.

HOUSE OF WAX and CREATURE FROM BLACK LAGOON are two 3Ds that make annual appearances, and each time, everyone is so hyped on it that I'm surprised we haven't seen more - even (or because of) the cheesy cardboard specs.

It is pretty sad, but Jaws 3-D is one of my most memorable cinema experiences.

One of my favourites was Charge At Feather River seen at the Savoy Burnt Oak in 1961.Spears arrows tomahawks and occasional indians came leaping out of the screen.Never forgotten it.

The only 3D film I have seen at the cinema must have been late 60's early 70's when at certain scenes a voice advised us that it was now time to put on the 3D glasses.

Do you remember those Viewmasters where you could look at photographs in 3-D? I wonder why they do not expand that to film? You could slip in your 3-D DVD and it would be like your own private cinema experience. They could call it D3D.

I think that is a concept that Spielberg is working on using interlaced palsma Tv screens, I think 3D DVDs are on the cards,it is not far fetched at all and could well be the next big thing within the next ten years, 3D TV!! excellent!

The trouble with those was that they gave the resultant image the appearance of being in layers, like scenery flats in a stage play

Default 3D Films

There were quite a few British 3D movies. Suggest you look out for my book "The World of 3D Movies" published back in the 1990s (it's rather amateur but has a mine of info) or the Valencian Film Institute's properly published Spanish language and updated version.

I am currently again updating this works as there are hundreds of films now in the stereoscopic format.

I remember that too, it must have been around 1980. I had really bad flu that week so missed most of the programmes but it did stick in my memory.

There was also an experiment with Sylverster McCoy's Doctor Who that used an optical illusion caused by the motion of the image and wearing glasses with one tinted lens. It was quite effective as long as the action kept moving. You sometime can achieve a similar effect while watching the horse racing.

I've never seen 3-d at the cinema.

A few years ago I did look around for a 3-d adapter for my video camera. I shoot underwater video and I thought 3-d film of fish and divers swimming around a wreck would be quite impressive. It would make of for the lack of colour in underwater footage.

"Oh! Pete!"

Around Is Around (1951)
The Diamond (1954)
The Night Caller (1965)
The Flesh and Blood Show (1972)
Four Dimensions of Greta (1972)

Not many that most people have heard of
Because of the difficulty in screening them, needing special projectors and/or special glasses, they never did get shown much.
And it was often a technique used by films that would have otherwise sunk without a trace in an attempt to garner some interest.

Again I say look out for my book - the BFI has a copy. You will find virtually all the British (and World) 3D films up to the early 1990s in it - far more than you think. There have been quite a few video presentations since plus a number of films made by the Co-op Film Society in the 1950s have come to light

As far as I know - and that also applies to most of the researchers I know - "Night Caller" was not made stereoscopicallky. Not a bad little film though of its kind.
