Managed to obtain an original brand new dvd of Basil Dearden's Saphire (1959), double billed with Flame in the Streets. Only cost 9.99 (british pounds). What a bargain.

Sapphire
Quite an eye opener this was, astoundingly racist by todays standards but then again that was the way it was then, my wife worked out who was the murderer long before I did
A very enjoyable slice of early 60s life in London and in colour to.
7/10
It was actually released in April 1959 and very much reflects the language and perceptions of its time. Strange to say it picked up very few bookings in the 1960s and the creative team behind it then turned their attention to “Victim” – another films which hold much interest for the scholar of the 1960s.
Saw this last night - very enjoyable indeed. Hard hitting for its time - and my! How times have changed. It's a real social document.
One puzzle - I noticed Rupert Davies' name on the titles as a character called Ferris. I can't for the life of me remeber seeing him! Or who "Ferris" is.
Can anybody help?
He plays a policeman - first seen about 21 minutes into the film - standing by Nigel Patrick's police car..
