this was not showing locally and i was going to travel a few miles to a cinema that was showing it but after one week it was off which is very unusual.Obviously not very popular and given the amount of negative reviews i will save my money and wait till it comes up on BBC.In any event not a great fan of remakes of classics.

Finally got round to watching this and wished I hadn't. The transfer from noirish 30s to colourful 60s failed and the story seemed all over the place. There was no sense of Pinkie being in a criminal gang and Sam Riley just wasn't convincing as a hoodlum wishing to climb the ladder. Biggest letdown was Helen Mirren who was as miscast as Riley and seemed to be hamming it up.

i think its worth watching for andrea riseboroughs version of rose
theres a depth to the character that is missing totally from the original movie .

biggest let down in the remake was john hurt who phones in his performance
it was supposed to be pete postlethwaite playing that part instead but he was too ill to do it when the time came
perhaps hurt was aggrieved he was second choice and didnt bother making an effort ?

I think that they failed to capture the feel of the 60s, it felt as if it was much earlier than that.
