Am I putting words into your mouth? Story telling 101 includes the art of the Protagonist relating to the audience/reader... If a story does not do this, it is usually because it is poorly told.

Mind you, as far as you are concerned, such a skill is part of the Horror Genre.
Yes, indeed you are putting words into my mouth....there is a world of difference between a film, like Dambusters, portraying the heroism of young men in the teeth of a gale of bullets for us to admire their bravery from a safe distance, and a film that tries to make us feel that we ourselves in the audience are undergoing that peril ...... for instance the D-Day landing sequence in Saving Private Ryan....it's not if a tale is well told or not, but the intention of the writer and director....does he want an audience member to be a spectator or more as a participant. Not all films that involve the audience in this participatory way are Horror films of course, but most Horror films do seek to involve the audience to make the thrills of extreme fear more effective and personal.

I was being somewhat sarcastic... or at least trying to be. I recognise I'm not much good at sarcasm.

Oh I give up. I've got better things to do than to endlessly bang heads with you when you don't even know the difference between Genre and Story Telling 101. I think you're simply talking out of the top of your head, and I'm losing my patience.

I've got the feeling you are not being serious and are simply playing wind-up.

I'm leaving this discussion before I say something I'll regret.

Ok, Aaryk, but for the record, I'm not playing wind-up, but purely responding to your comments. As you yourself originally requested. If you don't believe that different films aim for different levels of involvement of the audience, then I can't help you see that. Anyway, it was about time this - friendly, on my part at least - debate was drawn to a close, so I'll let it go at that.

Wouldn't you love a job like that? I mean writing a column or articles where you just had to write anything on your mind without really thinking, then wait for the cheque?

Those questions attributed to teenagers ("Is he going to make his move or what?" and "Is he going to get on the train or what?") are exactly what everyone is supposed to be asking, and what everyone has asked as they've watched the films since they were first released.

Teenagers may well also ask "Is this film in black and white or what?". So what?

Default Summer of British film is most popular since 1967

It's official: Summer of British film is most popular since 1967
Contributed by Nicol Wistreich

cinema_ticketThe wettest British summer since records began in 1914 appears to have helped British cinema going reach it's highest admissions in 40 years, up some 25% over an average year, and up 44% on 2000.

50.8m visits were made in June to August, according to the Film Distributors Association, with the 5.5m admissions recorded during The Simpsons' opening weekend being possibly the busiest in history. The Summer of British Film was a promotion by BBC2 and UK Film Council to encourage people to watch British films at the cinema, with digital prints of seven classics accompanied with BBC2 documentaries.
