I have just read a Newspaper report . It seems that in-coming ITV Chairman, Archie Norman, is considering the removal of ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 from the Freeview platform. He may turn them into Pay per view channels. I would like to point out that here in Norfolk, Manure is often available free and that I for one will not be paying for any of his services unless their content improves dramatically. I would rather spend my money on buying DVD's of something worthwhile rather than the endless round of repeats that makes up much of their output at the moment.

The output of ITV1 seems to be predominately programmes like X Factor and I'm a Celebrity...... which I presume is 'cheap' television. Those progs + soaps seem to make up their entire reportoire and there is the very rare pearl to be found in the ITV oyster as far as I'm concerned. The other ITV channels do show some of their better output, I'm a great fan of Morse and Frost, Poirot etc so I would say that but ITV would not be sorely missed. The comparison to manure is particularly apt.

i agree! i'm a fan of 'poirot','marple' etc but if ITV can't afford to show the new episodes then i don't see the point in ITV and would gladly see the back of the channel and buy the dvds instead!

Presumably they will make more money from subscriptions than the advertising then... They were stupid to dilute their revenue in the first place whilst quadrupling their labour costs. Who do they think they are? The BBC?

I doubt ITV3 and ITV4 have much in the way of labour costs - how many people do you need to put a Poirot dvd in a player?

ITV 4 must have come to the end of it's natural life with rerunning ITC DVD's - I guess if their budget extended to buying the Network DVD of "The Baron" they could re-run that 15 times.

Absolutely nothing on there at the weekend apart from Darts......great if you like Darts I guess.

ITV 3 must have worn out their DVD copies of Poirot, Morse, and Frost by now too.

These channels are not breaking new ground, so good luck to Mr Norman if he can find some mugs who'll pay to receive the output.

ITV 4 is not so bad, Guiness Prmeiership rugby highlights at least and re-runs of Minder, The Sweeney & The Professionals.

I recalled that the one highlight of ITV4 for me was the Tour de France and found an interesting exchange online, which indicates adverts can cost the channels more than they get in revenues......

Thanks for your comments. There is indeed a reason for Red Button. If we put it on ITV4 then it would firstly cost a lot more. It requires us to have more staff & facilities. To do what? Insert ad breaks. So Red Button is cheaper for us & you don't get ad breaks. Obviously the downside is that it's not available to everyone. We hope that next year it will be on ITV4 live every day. (PROD).

ITV.com - A BIG THANK YOU TO ITV

It would seem the long-term future for such a channel can only lie in subscription.

Since the Freeview up date a month or so back some people can't get ITV 3 and 4 without a sky box.

Personally I'd pay for channel which showed Tour de France, Rugby, and film.

Believe you me, when you don't get the full ITV1 programmes you know what you are missing. I have commented before about the dearth of programmes on STV. Thank goodness they have decided not to cancel Taggart.

I'm just wondering if ITV would save money if they got rid of their time-shift channels. I don't know whether they're available on Freeview, but on the Sky platform there are ITV2 +1, ITV3 +1, and ITV4 +1 as well as the live versions, so you can watch the same programmes one hour later. Unless they recoup the costs with advertising, this must be quite a cost for ITV to occupy satellite channel slots.

I know this is an ITV chat thread but the disclosure of the BBC salaries the other week was quite interesting.

The controllers of both BBC 3 and BBC 4 get the same basic salary as that of BBC 2, even though they only come on at 7pm and generally show repeats of Dr Who. I wonder how the BBC justify this internally.

What!! It might be the case that he's trying to get the last few coppers into the ITV bank account before it finally folds.

You'd have to be either barmy, or have plenty of money to throw away, to pay to watch these channels.

I totally agree. Try living in the STV region for a while and then see what your views are regarding the significance of ITV 2 & 3.
