This article was on AOL today, I thought it was worth sharing considering the amount of British sitcoms featured in the list.



Good characters are the key to any sitcom, but sometimes the best ones are the supporting cast or guest stars rather than the main characters.



We've compiled a list of our top 10 favourite sitcom scene stealers, and listed them in reverse order. Have a butcher's hook and let us know if you think we've missed anybody...



10. Lucille Two in Arrested Development



It's the funniest, cleverest sitcom of the noughties - and our jaws dropped when we saw that Liza Minelli was playing a caricature of herself in it. Her mere presence would probably have secured her this spot, but luckily she's very good as well...

9. Navid from Still Game



This brilliant Scottish show is packed full of great characters, but it's shopkeeper Navid who does the best scene-stealing with his scathing monologues, such as this one about Anne Robinson (caution: contains swearing)...

8. CJ from The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin



Ask anyone to quote something from Reggie Perrin and the chances are they'll say "I didn't get where I am today...", even though pompous boss CJ wasn't actually in the show that much...

7. Finchy from The Office



He was the larger-than-life 'friend' who David Brent thought would impress his colleagues, but he just ended up antagonising everyone. Everyone knows somebody like Finchy, and he became an instant comedy icon...

6. Johnny from Police Squad



The hilarious spoof cop show that preceded The Naked Gun was packed with great characters, but it was all-knowing shoe shine Johnny that we looked forward to seeing the most. In this clip he gives US music show host Dick Clark some tips...

5. Marsha from Spaced



It may have launched the career of Simon Pegg, but it was the supporting cast that made cult nineties sitcom Spaced such a treat for many fans - and our favourite was man-eating landlady Marsha...

4. Blakey from On The Buses



Just like CJ from Reggie Perrin, bus inspector Blakey was a ridiculous caricature of an authority figure - and also like CJ he had one of the most memorable catchphrases in sitcom history. All togther now: "I 'ate you Butler!"...

3. Lord Flashheart from Blackadder



There's plenty of larger-than-life characters in Blackadder anyway, so Rik Mayall really had to turn it up to 11 to steal his scene as Lord Flashheart in series two, and he turned in one of the most memorable short performances in comedy history...

2. Newman from Seinfeld



The nemesis of Jerry Seinfeld, Wayne Knight portrays postal worker Newman with such evil glee that we always end up rooting for him...

Shifty, unreliable and selfish, Super Hans' appetite for drugs and chaos gave rise to some of the funniest moments in the early series of Peep Show - including the immportal line: "Tell you what, that crack, it's really moreish."...
