If you get the chance watch the comedy roast of The Shat - I don't usually like these back slapping things but it's worth it for Betty White she's hilarious ( "I am so old I caught the bouquet at Bill's first wedding, I hope to live long enough to catch the cock ring at Sulu's)

Almost seven months later and I still haven't selected my favourite images from the scene. I hope to put that right soon. In the meantime, this fluffy white cat supposedly belonged to 'Pawnbroker' Frederick Farley in the Tales of the Unexpected episode Mrs. Bixby and the Colonel's Coat (1979):

The Scene-Stealing Dog in 'Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)', with Bernard Kay - Part 1

    Guest: Geoffrey Hughes

Much later than planned, I have finally selected some images from my favourite Dog Chases Postman scene, in the Randall and Hopkirk episode Somebody Just Walked Over My Grave (1969). Wellendcanons would probably give a better description of the events than me but I'll do my best.

Bernard Kay and Geoffrey Hughes kidnap the hippie son (Nigel Terry) of Mandrake, played by George Murcell. Geoff, posing as a gardener, delivers a ransom note at Mandrake's mansion (in reality Knebworth House), but instead of dropping it through the letterbox he leaves it halfway in. Shortly afterwards, the villains are surprised to see the family dog return the note to them!:

"Did you deliver the ransom note?" - "Everything went perfectly!" ...

    ("Perfectly?")

Pondering on what to do next, they see a postman riding his bike towards the mansion and Bernard seizes the opportunity to gain access by attacking the unfortunate young man and stealing his uniform. But the plan to deliver the letter is again thwarted:

Yes, it's that Scene-Stealing dog again, turning nasty when he sees Bernard dressed as a postman:

Always a mistake for a postman to stand up to a dangerous dog:

    "Grrr ..."

    More in a moment ...

Not quite in the same calibre as some of the foregoing animals, but for some light relief (and she did afford herself some relief at the time):

    Lulu, BLUE PETER's favourite pachyderm.

The funniest moment for me was when John Noakes thought it was all over, he unwittingly backed into what Lulu had left behind.

    Perfect example, Gerald

The Scene-Stealing Dog in 'Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)', with Bernard Kay - Part 2

Thanks very much, Jim. Geoffrey Hughes was 25 when Somebody Just Walked Over My Grave was filmed in July 1969. As I'm sure you know, he has not been well lately and we can only hope he gets better soon. Bernard Kay is still going strong. His Wikipedia profile informs me that he was recently in a play called, ironically, Dream of the Dog. For the actor, this was more like a nightmare!:

Bernard tries to calm the animal and, for a moment, it looks like he's succeeded:

But the postman makes the mistake of running away, and our four-legged friend just has to follow:

Hard to believe Bernard Kay is now 82. I really like his performance in this. Also in the episode was stock footage of the ITC Owl, who I will introduce you to soon. Until reading the aforementioned Wikipedia profile, I had no idea Bernard was married to Patricia Haines (following her divorce from Michael Caine). They have at least one scene together in the show. The things you learn ...

As this is in the British Television section, I'm going to start another 'Scene-Stealing Animals' thread later for their contributions to the movies, probably at General Film Chat.

    Belated thanks, billy

This scene-stealing animal is found by Marla Landi in the pre-credit sequence of HG Wells’ Invisible Man - The White Rabbit (1959):

Available on You Tube, Camelot Broadcasting and the Internet Archive. I wish they'd been around in the 1950s ...

The White Rat in this Gideon’s Way episode, from 1964, is the nickname of albino villain Ray McAnally as well as his pet:

With Virginia Maskell as Ray's misguided girlfriend.

Callan (Edward Woodward), who has just saved the life of his boss, finds this cat in Red Knight, White Knight (1969):

"I think he's got nine lives, mate. He's gonna need 'em all."

Judy Cornwell, one of Dr. Hoffman’s Children, is also seen with a fluffy white cat in (the return of) Van Der Valk (1991):

Many of us recall Lulu from Blue Peter, but who remembers Lofty's endearing little friend in It Ain't Half Hot Mum? A real scene stealer for sure and seeing crusty old BSM Williams with a heavy heart ordering the 'firing squad' to take aim brings a lump to the throat every time... don't worry though, it's a happy ending!

Yet another big fluffy cat, belonging to John Cater in the first episode of South Riding - The Powers That Be (1974):

Unlike the posters at Dirk Bogarde's thread, I Cater for all tastes!
