I am really enjoying the series Tropic Of Cancer - currently showing on the BBC following the journey of Broadcaster and writer Simon Reeve. This series completes his trilogy of journeys exploring the tropics (previous series Equator and tropic of Capricorn)

I enjoy travel documentaries and happen to think that Simon Reeve is a first class Broadcaster whose lack of ego is refreshing and I hope that we see a lot mroe of him.

Anyone else enjoy these programmes? or any other travel series over the years?

I've always been a big fan of travel documentaries and have very recently got round to collecting the 6 series starring Michael Palin.

Around the World in 80 Days

    Pole To Pole

    Full Circle

    Himalaya

    Sahara

    New urope

Apart from the excellent photography and superb locations I find myself smiling at Palin's gentle humour in any given situation.

All of these sets (mostly 3 disc affairs) are now available for around the £8 mark and definitely worth every penny.

Thanks for the recommendation on this trilogy, I give them a go soon but I've promised myself I'll buy the Coast series next after hearing good things about it here.

It's not been the same for me since Alan Whicker retired......I enjoyed Whicker's War.

Thanks - Palin is great and the boxed sets are cheap (have just taken a look) I used to like the Whickers World porgrammes too - they repeated some on BBC a few months ago.

Alan Whicker was actually first choice to present Palin's first adventure Around the World in 80 Days but he turned it down. Palin was in fact third choice.

I watched one of the Michael Palin ones, but I was irritated by the way the camera kept focusing on him all the time!

I just checked, GoogleboxUK, and you're right about the low cost. And used, some are under £2! These splendid series are still expensive in the States. Not fair!

I especially liked Himalaya and Sahara.

I believe that Noel Edmonds was second choice - Edmonds was also the choice of the BBC to present Have I Got News for You, but thankfully not the choice of the production company!

Quite agree - I think that would have been awful. It would be good to see Angus Deyton back at least for once as a guest on HIGNFY
