BBC Worldwide is to bow more TV channels in the U.S. in the next 12 months as part of its strategy to derive two thirds of its income from outside the U.K. by 2012.

Hopefully at least one of them will be a drama channel devoted to programs either not ever exported across the pond, or that haven't aired over here for a very long time.

I've pretty much given up watching BBC Canada as all they ever seem to show anymore is home reno, home sales, and boring fashion type programs.

This is the stuff the BBC gives us in the UK as well...........all 'quality programmes' (?) paid for from our licence fee !

I'm puzzled by the use of "to bow": "LONDON -- BBC Worldwide is to bow more TV channels in the U.S. in the next 12 months..."

At present there is one BBCAmerica channel. Does this mean that the BBC hopes to inject more channels into US cable? Dunno how that will happen. The current BBC America one began well years ago, but now is limited to 2 or 3 shows repeating, usually Ramsay or cleaning your house or what to wear, Ugh to all three.

I think they mean injecting more channels into US cable. I'm hoping for spillage north of the border, even though we're a tiny market.

We have three in Canada, BBC Canada (which shows a lot of the same things, BBC America does), BBC Kids, and BBC um World(?), which is the BBC news channel.

More strings to their bow maybe..........

Many young Americans on the web seem convinced The Prisoner is a BBC programme.....

I'm sure it isn't English and if it's an Americanism it's not one I've ever encountered. If they meant "to transmit" why didn't they just say so??!!

    Might it be a typo?

Might be "Variety-speak" for "to debut" or "unveil" or even just "introduce". Metaphorically the new channels will come out and be made to bow to their new audiences ...

From Variety's own Slanguage site - which is often needed, even by Americans and even by people in the business, to translate what they write ...

bow -- (n.) opening or premiere; (v.) to debut a production; "The pic's bow was in January"; "The Nederlander Organization will bow its revival of 'Wonderful Town' next year."

Good grief! What a strange new invented use. Thanks, Steve, and all who explained.

Variety has always had a language of their own. Especially in their headlines.

What would you make of the famous headline

    ?

Note that that one is from 1935. Since then they've been getting more and more obscure

The translation would be movies made for the rural market have not been doing much business.

I understood that a lot better than a lot of the words on this site.

Thanks, Steve. That does explain the rationale.

I don't plan to use the expression myself, though....

Haven't been doing much business in the rural areas. It's just the people in the Sticks that Nix them. They could have been doing well in the cities
